Bethesda’s lead developer Todd Howard announced “The Elder Scrolls 6” at the E3 2018 press conference. A first teaser trailer was also shown at that time. Since then, rumors have surfaced regularly. TECHBOOK summarizes what is currently known about the content and release of “The Elder Scrolls 6.”

“The Elder Scrolls 6” finally in development after “Starfield” launch

It’s been a long time since we’ve heard anything official about a new “Elder Scrolls” installment. While the online version is regularly updated with new content and DLCs, fans of the main series have had to wait patiently for news—until now.

Bethesda’s PR chief Pete Hines confirmed to the industry magazine Vandal that TES6 is no longer in the pre-production phase. This isn’t surprising, given that Bethesda’s “Starfield” is launching in September. While the studio will still be busy with the major sci-fi title, resources are now being freed up for the “Skyrim” successor.

However, these good news also mean that there’s still a long way to go before a new “Elder Scrolls” installment is released. During the development phase, studios typically begin the detailed construction of the game world. Experts estimate that “The Elder Scrolls 6” will launch no earlier than 2027.

Few details in the teaser

The 36-second mini-teaser hit the one million views mark on YouTube within five hours of its release. It has now surpassed 15 million. However, few concrete details about TES6 can be gleaned from it. A camera pans over a coastal mountain landscape, a fortress on the ground, and the familiar Elder Scrolls melody—that’s it. Everything else is left to the speculation of the role-playing community, and Bethesda has remained tight-lipped since then.

The exact region where “TES 6” is set is already a hot topic in the video’s comments. Many believe it to be High Rock in the north of the Elder Scrolls continent Tamriel. However, a leak has now suggested a different region.

Mega leak on “The Elder Scrolls 6” setting and release

The potential leak comes from Twitter user Skullzi and was published on April 26, 2022. Allegedly, “The Elder Scrolls 6” is set to release between 2025 and 2026; this doesn’t seem entirely unrealistic. In general, the game is said to be in full development. This would mean that Bethesda is focusing its resources on the new “Elder Scrolls” installment.

According to the leak, the game will not be set in High Rock, the region in the far northwest of Tamriel. Instead, TES6 is said to be located slightly further south in Hammerfell. This area can currently only be visited in “The Elder Scrolls 2: Daggerfall” and the MMORPG “The Elder Scrolls Online” (ESO).

The landscape of this province is primarily characterized by desert and wasteland, but it also has a large coastline, which would match the teaser images. The human race of the Redguards mainly inhabits this area.

Are we getting a completely new game system in TES6?

The leak also mentions a new faction and political system. Unfortunately, the Twitter user does not elaborate further. In “Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim,” there are already two opposing factions: the Imperials and the Stormcloaks. Choosing one side has only minimal impact on the main story. In “Fallout 4,” players can choose from several factions, and in ESO, the choice of one of the three alliances is very relevant for the PvP area. This leak is therefore quite possible, especially since Skullzi has previously gained attention for accurate insights.

Fans had to wait a long time

The highly successful predecessor “Skyrim” is almost eleven years old. Due to the series’ success, it has long been clear that there will be a sequel. Typically, Bethesda released a new “The Elder Scrolls” installment every five years. The porting to numerous platforms over time is likely responsible for the delay. Additionally, there have been many new content releases for “The Elder Scrolls: Online” in recent years. The milking of Skyrim and the entire game world of Tamriel in ESO has recently caused discontent among fans and even became an internet joke, which the developer itself addressed in a humorous video at E3.

With “The Elder Scrolls: Blades,” Bethesda also released a mobile game for smartphones before the “TES 6” announcement. However, for the fan community, this is no substitute for another main installment of the series.
