Those who switch electricity providers usually don’t have to wait long for the final bill. By law, it must be issued no later than six weeks after the switch. However, in many cases, E.ON did not adhere to this deadline.
The energy provider’s actions led to numerous complaints to the Federation of German Consumer Organizations. The organization responded with a lawsuit and achieved an initial success in March 2024 at the Munich Regional Court. Nevertheless, complaints continued to come in.
Consumer Organization Prevails
As the situation did not improve, the consumer organization initiated enforcement proceedings. This eventually led to out-of-court discussions with E.ON, resulting in a settlement announced on the organization’s website. E.ON committed to complying with legal requirements in the future and sending bills on time.

Additionally, the settlement provides that former customers can receive compensation, but it is subject to certain conditions. Affected individuals must take action to receive the money. Eligibility exists only if the electricity contract was terminated between March 20, 2024, and April 30, 2026, and the final bill arrived later than six weeks. Whether these conditions are met can be checked on the consumer organization’s website.
This Much Money Is Possible
The amount of compensation depends on the individual case. If the back payment or credit is less than 500 euros, affected individuals can claim 15 euros. However, this requires that a complaint was filed or a consultation with the consumer organization took place by April 30, 2026. This condition is waived if the credit exceeds 500 euros. In this case, 30 euros can be claimed.
Those who paid for a consultation with the consumer organization can receive additional compensation. If the corresponding invoice is presented, E.ON will pay an additional 30 euros for these costs. In total, up to 60 euros are possible. To apply for the payment, affected individuals must use the contact form at eon.de/verbraucheranfragen and describe their case.
