Despite all security measures, unauthorized individuals can still gain access to the home router and thus the network. However, this becomes more difficult if your own Wi-Fi network is virtually invisible to outsiders. A simple setting can help achieve this.
Routers are generally well-secured by default. However, those who explore their device’s menu will discover settings that can be quite helpful. Beyond the factory settings, most routers offer various functions to enhance protection against data loss and costly phone calls or to implement measures against hackers and malware. For example, if you want to protect your Wi-Fi from unauthorized access, you can easily make it invisible. TECHBOOK explains in a few steps how this works with the Fritzbox or the Speedport routers from Telekom.
Overview
Make Wi-Fi Invisible on the Fritzbox
The Fritzbox from AVM is known for its user-friendly menu and numerous settings options. AVM keeps the barriers low so that even those who are not technically savvy can navigate it. To access the Fritzbox menu, users need to enter fritz.box or alternatively 192.168.178.1 in their internet browser’s address bar. This opens the login screen, where they can log in with their username and password.
Step 1: Open Fritzbox Wi-Fi Settings
The necessary settings to make the Wi-Fi on the Fritzbox invisible are all found in the left menu bar. If an older Fritz!OS is installed on the router, users may need to activate the advanced view first. However, if the Fritzbox is running with a current firmware like Fritz!OS 7.50 or higher, this step is not required.
In this case, users can directly click on the “Wi-Fi” menu item and then on “Radio Network.”

Step 2: Deactivate Wi-Fi Visibility
Within the Fritzbox Wi-Fi settings, scroll down almost to the end of the view. Here, you’ll find a collapsed field labeled “More Information on the Wi-Fi Radio Network.” Clicking on it expands the field, revealing additional information and settings. This includes the last option, “Hide the Name of the Wi-Fi Radio Network.” Checking this box will make the network invisible to outsiders.

Users should note that once this setting is activated, the now invisible Wi-Fi of their Fritzbox will no longer appear in the list of available networks. This is not an issue as long as devices are already connected to the home network and the connection is saved. However, if you want to add new devices to the network, the invisibility setting must be temporarily deactivated.

Make Wi-Fi Invisible on Speedport Routers
This tip can also be applied to many Speedport routers from Telekom. To do this, select the “Configuration” menu item in the overview and then “Security.” Next, users must navigate to the “Wi-Fi Security Settings” category on the now-opened security page. Here, they click on “SSID & Encryption.”
A setup page opens, where, in addition to other options such as “Network Name (SSID),” “Encryption and Password for Encryption,” the “Network Name” option is also found. The setting directly below is of interest: “SSID Invisible.” When checked, the Wi-Fi will be invisible in the future.
