Fritz!, formerly AVM, has released the current Fritz!OS 8.20 for the widely used Fritzbox 7590 AX. The extensive update brings over 40 new features, including improved mesh performance and new energy-saving functions. Fritz! has also optimized smart home control and internet outage protection.
With the rollout of the update, the Berlin-based router manufacturer is launching the next wave of updates for its router software. The update can now be installed via the user interface or manually from the Fritz! website. In addition to stability and security improvements, Fritz!OS 8.20 also includes numerous enhancements for mesh, smart home, parental controls, and energy management. Other router models are currently receiving experimental lab updates ahead of the final version.
Fritz!OS 8.20 Brings New Features for the Fritzbox 7590 AX
Among the most notable new features is the new online monitor. This provides a graphical representation of the data usage of individual devices in the home network, offering a transparent overview of network load. In the mesh area, the company has significantly expanded the repeater function. The devices now independently select the best connection in the home network, resulting in higher data rates and more stability. This is a noticeable improvement, especially for complex home networks.

New Internet Outage Protection with Fritz!Failsafe
With the Fritz!Failsafe feature, the Fritzbox manufacturer introduces an automatic switch to alternative internet connections. If the main connection fails, the system can switch to mobile networks or other defined backup lines without requiring a restart.
The user interface for parental controls has also been revised. Access profiles and their assigned devices can now be displayed more clearly. Aside from this innovation, the general user interface of the Fritzbox 7590 AX benefits from numerous optimizations through the new Fritz!OS 8.20, according to the manufacturer.
Another innovation concerns power management: With Energy Efficient Ethernet (EEE), the energy consumption of the Fritzbox can now be specifically controlled. Users can also configure this separately for WAN and LAN connections if desired.
Lab Updates Available for Other Models
In parallel with the final release for the Fritzbox 7590 AX, lab updates are currently running for models such as the Fritzbox 7690, 7530 AX, and 7530, preparing them for the major update to Fritz!OS 8.20. These test versions are intended only for experienced users who want to use new features in advance. A fixed date for the final release of the updates on these devices has not yet been set.
