Octopus Paul became famous worldwide during the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The creature from the Sea Life Center Oberhausen correctly predicted numerous matches of the German national team, turning into an international media phenomenon. Now, RTL 2 is reviving the idea. However, this time, the focus is not on a real octopus but a digital version based on artificial intelligence.
With the format “The World Cup Oracle with Paul 2.0,” an AI takes on the role of the well-known tournament oracle. The broadcaster is banking on a modern version of the concept that garnered significant attention many years ago.
AI Uses Unusual Information
Paul 2.0 operates differently from traditional prediction models. The digital octopus does not analyze conventional statistics. Form curves or expert assessments do not play a role in the forecasts either.
Instead, the AI relies on quirky background information about teams, players, and nations. Based on these fun facts, Paul 2.0 makes predictions for selected matches of the FIFA World Cup.
Several Short Clips Planned
RTL 2 plans a total of 27 short clips with the digital oracle for the tournament. The broadcaster focuses on selected World Cup matches.
The program includes the opening match and all games involving Germany. Additionally, matches of the tournament favorites will be considered. From the round of 16, all knockout games will also be part of the format.
