In recent weeks, viewers on Sat.1 have been able to indulge in nostalgic memories with cult telenovelas on Sundays. However, this is about to change as the network is completely overhauling its programming.
For some time now, the ratings for the two major networks ProSieben and Sat.1, which are the flagships of the joint media group, have not been looking so good. ProSieben has already responded by scrapping its long-standing concept for the important Sunday evening primetime slot. Sat.1, on the other hand, seems to be more in a phase of exploration. After months of tweaking the weekend programming, the lineup is now undergoing another radical change.
New Breeze in Sat.1’s TV Programming
The network Sat.1 announced several weeks ago that it plans to change its entire afternoon programming. Currently, the lineup is dominated by scripted reality shows such as “Auf Streife,” “Klinik am Südring,” and “K11 – Die neuen Fälle.” These shows are set to be removed from the schedule after 4 p.m. later this year. “Scripted realities have really been a long-standing part of Sat.1 (…). However, we don’t believe it’s the future. That’s why there will be a radical cut, still this year,” said network head Daniel Rosemann at the Screenforce Days in June.
In place of the scripted reality shows, live TV will take over. A format called “Volles Haus – Sat.1 Live” is already announced for winter 2022/23. Rosemann added:
“In ‘Volles Haus!’ we will inform and entertain. We can talk about the Royal Family and also give tips on how to shop most affordably right now. But it won’t just be talk: We will entertain and inform our viewers with contributions from around the world and self-produced docu-soaps. Of course, ‘Volles Haus!’ will also feature the most important news of the day.”

The new format is set to run for three hours daily, mixing current news with entertainment. The show will be hosted by Jasmin Wagner and Jochen Schropp. Originally, there were plans to revive TV legend Britt Hagedorn and her successful ’90s and ’00s show “Britt – Der Talk um eins” afterward. The response to this announcement was so positive that the decision was made to bring the comeback forward. “Britt – Der Talk” will now start on October 24.

In addition to the already mentioned shows, the network has announced and even launched several new formats. Since recently, starting at 6 p.m., we see the popular TV chef and “The Taste” juror Alexander Kumptner. In his show “Doppelt kocht besser,” couples compete against each other in the kitchen.
Following a successful start, it is now confirmed that “Mein Mann kann” will continue from October. In the show with Daniel Boschmann, celebrity couples compete with and against each other. Additionally, two new dating shows, “Paar Love” and “Rate my Date,” premiered in July.

Sat.1 Drops Telenovelas from Weekend Programming
When new content is introduced, old formats must make way. This time, “Verliebt in Berlin” and “Anna und die Liebe” are being cut. The cult telenovelas had just returned to the schedule. However, with ratings no longer measurable, they must be removed again. Instead, Sat.1 will air reruns of “Buchstaben Battles” and “The Voice of Germany,” as well as new episodes of “Das große Backen – Die Profis.” And there’s good news for blockbuster fans: Since sister network ProSieben is now largely focusing on its own shows during primetime, major films will at least partially move to Sat.1.
Overall, Sat.1 is currently struggling with ratings. This is partly because “Wir werden mehr” with Birgit Schrowange has not yet established itself as the hoped-for flagship–quite the opposite. Especially the Saturday TV programming on Sat.1 resembles a patchwork quilt. More changes are likely in the coming weeks.
