The various streaming services on the market typically offer different pricing options. Accordingly, the range of features varies, with the more expensive subscriptions always offering the most. In addition to being ad-free, they mainly score with technical superiority, such as streams in 4K. Until recently, fans could also watch movies and series in Dolby Vision on Disney+. But that now seems to be a thing of the past.
No More Dolby Vision on Disney+
Dolby Vision is the first HDR format and remains one of the most widely used in the film and TV industry. It ensures that content is always displayed in the best picture quality on all possible devices. Since its market launch, Dolby Vision has also been available on Disney+. But as reported by “Hifi.de,” this is no longer the case.
In fact, any mention of Dolby Vision on Disney+ has disappeared from an info page on video quality. Regarding image content in “High Dynamic Range” mode, the provider only refers to the standard HDR10. However, it should be noted that the recently introduced HDR10+ is also not listed yet. In the comments on “Caschys Blog,” several users confirm that Dolby Vision is also missing for them on Disney+.
Speculation About the End of Dolby Vision
According to the report, support for the image format is missing on smart TVs with Android or Google TV, LG devices with webOS, or even Apple TV 4K. The absence of Dolby Vision has been noticed in series like “Alien Earth,” “Andor,” and “Star Wars: Visions.”
The reasons for this can only be speculated on at the moment. TECHBOOK asked Disney for a statement and received the following response:
“Support for Dolby Vision on Disney+ varies by device and region. In Germany, Dolby Vision is currently not available. Disney+ automatically detects the best available format based on device, region, and subscription type; this includes HDR10 and UHD, both of which are supported on Disney+.”
A Disney spokesperson
Online, there is speculation that it could be a technical error, especially since the feature has reportedly caused problems in the past. Consumers are also considering whether there might be licensing reasons for this and if Disney wants to save on fees. Another possibility: Dolby Vision 2 was recently announced. Perhaps the company simply wants to upgrade. However, it is currently unclear if and when Dolby Vision will return to Disney+.
