The streaming service Sky has updated its user interface. With this change, the provider is taking a big step toward accommodating its subscribers, as the service becomes less cumbersome to use.
In the fiercely competitive streaming market, two factors are crucial: content and technology. While other services are engaged in a battle over the best exclusive titles, Sky has stood out primarily for its technology–unfortunately, in a negative way. While streaming content on various devices works well with Netflix, Amazon, Disney+, and others, Sky and its associated streaming service Wow required an extra player. That is now changing: Sky is eliminating the player and finally allowing users to stream via the web browser.

Sky Eliminates Its Player
Sky implemented the technical change in mid-July. Until then, those who wanted to stream movies or series on Sky and Wow had to rely on an external player on laptops and PCs. That is now over. Through popular browsers like Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Mozilla Firefox, and Apple Safari, all content can now be accessed. The interface offers standard features found with other providers, such as a pause button, the option to skip forward or backward by ten seconds, timeline navigation, audio and subtitle language adjustments, and full-screen mode.
Sky commented on this as follows: “Good news for all laptop and PC streamers: We have improved the Wow user experience on PC and Mac, so you can now play your favorite content directly in the browser. (…) The available features remain unchanged for you.” The Wow player is now obsolete and can be uninstalled.

It’s important to note that the change only applies to laptops and PCs. For all other devices, such as smartphones or tablets, the corresponding app is still required for streaming, as is the case with other services.
