ProSiebenSat.1 and the pay-TV provider Sky have announced plans to expand their partnership in Germany and Austria. This will particularly affect Sky customers, as TECHBOOK explains below.
After the ProSiebenSat.1 group was initially considered a potential buyer of Sky Deutschland, that seems to be off the table for now. Instead, they aim to expand their existing partnership with a long-term distribution agreement. This is primarily intended to benefit the announced Sky Stream. But what exactly does this mean for users?
Partnership between Sky and ProSiebenSat.1 Expanded
The name Sky Stream refers to Sky’s new streaming box. The company announced it back in March 2024, as reported by TECHBOOK. Sky plans to integrate linear (IP)TV with streaming services and apps. Additionally, the company promises an intuitive user interface and innovative features.
Sky has now announced that ProSiebenSat.1’s offerings will also be part of this package. Sky Stream will launch in Germany on July 31 and in Austria in 2025. Parts of the newly announced deal will also take effect earlier for Austrian users.
What Changes for Customers
In the joint press release from Sky and ProSiebenSat.1, it was announced that Sky Stream will launch with all the group’s free-to-air channels. The in-house streaming app Joyn will also be immediately available. In Austria, Joyn will launch on Sky Q in August 2024 and will then be available on the new device with the launch of Sky Stream in 2025.
“With the launch of Sky Stream, we are opening a new, important chapter for our customers,” explains Germany CEO Barny Mills. “The media landscape is becoming increasingly complex with its growing range of content, apps, and different providers. Sky Stream is the perfect answer to this, as we conveniently bundle everything in one place with the innovative platform.”
Evelyn Rothblum, Chief Transformation Officer at Sky Deutschland, also expressed optimism about the partnership between Sky and ProSiebenSat.1. “Through the expanded partnership with ProSiebenSat.1, we are expanding the extensive content offering for our customers on all Sky platforms (…). With Sky Stream, entertainment fans can find all TV content conveniently on one interface, regardless of the provider.”
