A well-known streaming option is disappearing from one of the most successful consoles of all time. Netflix is ending support for the PlayStation 3. As of March 2, 2026, the streaming service will no longer be available on the console.
Users who still watch Netflix on the PlayStation 3 are already being informed directly in the app about the upcoming end, according to reports. This marks the final disappearance of one of the longest-supported Netflix platforms. For many, this ends a piece of streaming history in the living room.
Streaming Began on a Detour
The collaboration between Netflix and the PlayStation 3 began in late 2009. At that time, Netflix was not yet available as a traditional app. Instead, users had to order a special Netflix streaming disc by mail. This Blu-ray utilized the console’s BD-Live functions. BD-Live is a technology that allows Blu-rays to load additional content over the Internet. Through this detour, the PlayStation 3 connected to Netflix.
Due to a time-limited agreement, other consoles were initially not allowed to integrate Netflix into their software. Only after this agreement expired in 2010 did Netflix become part of the PlayStation 3’s system software. The app appeared in the so-called XMB menu. The XMB is the console’s user interface where games, movies, and music are displayed. For many, the PlayStation 3 was the easiest way to use Netflix on the TV.

Lasted Longer Than Other Consoles
Compared to other devices of the same generation, the PlayStation 3 was supported for an especially long time. Netflix ended on the Wii as early as 2019. On the Wii U, the service disappeared from the eShop at the end of 2020 and was completely shut down by June 2021. The Xbox 360 also lost Netflix access by 2024 at the latest. The PlayStation 3 remained active beyond that and was supported longer than all other consoles of its generation.
The reason for ending support is primarily technical. The PlayStation 3’s hardware is from a different era. Modern security standards, new streaming technologies, and current performance requirements can no longer be reliably implemented on it. At the same time, the number of users who still actively use Netflix on the PlayStation 3 is likely very low. For Netflix, this end is therefore a logical step in modernizing its device offerings.
These Options Remain Now
For the remaining users, the end still represents a cut. Those who want to continue watching Netflix will need to switch to other devices. These include current gaming consoles, smart TVs, or external solutions like streaming sticks and streaming boxes. In many households, this switch has long since occurred, as streaming services are usually used on multiple devices simultaneously. With the final end date, the PlayStation 3 now officially loses its role as a streaming hub.
