The reshuffling in the German entertainment industry has reached a new level with RTL’s acquisition of Sky. It was recently confirmed that the Cologne-based broadcaster is allowed to complete the mega-acquisition. As a result, numerous changes are on the horizon, including impacts on Sky subscriptions due to RTL.
New Bundles for Wow and RTL+ Announced
Both Sky and RTL have recently outlined their future joint course in separate press releases. This will include several changes to the offerings, such as technical consolidations or revised Sky subscriptions with and without RTL.
Later this year, RTL promises the first joint bundle offer from Wow and RTL+ for Germany and Austria. By 2027, RTL+ is set to become an integral part of the entire Sky offering.
Changes to Sky Subscriptions Due to RTL
It appears that existing Sky subscriptions will also be adjusted due to RTL. In June, the company announced plans to eliminate 24-month contracts and make pricing more transparent. Now, there is talk of a “simpler pricing structure.”
As before, prices apply for the first twelve months, after which they increase by five to ten euros, depending on whether you have subscribed to just sports, fiction, or both combined. These are the new packages:
New Customer Offer for Film and Series Fans
Includes Sky Stream, Netflix Standard, and Paramount+ Basic, as well as live Friday Bundesliga games for 19.99 euros per month.
Bundesliga Package
With Sky Stream, Sky Entertainment, and the Bundesliga for 24.99 euros per month, down from the previous 29.99 euros per month.
All Live Sports from Sky
Now even cheaper, costing only 29.99 euros per month instead of the previous 34.99. Includes Sky Stream, Sky Entertainment, the Bundesliga, and Sky Sport.
The Best of Sky
Includes Sky Stream, movies, series, and the full live sports offering for 39.99 euros per month.
Everything from Sky
All packages (sports, Netflix, Paramount+), Sky Stream, and additionally UHD quality, Sky Kids, Dolby Atmos sound, and multiscreen for 49.99 euros per month.
New Brand Management for Sky and RTL
As Sky specifically states, the devices Sky Stream, Sky Q, Sky Q Mini, and Sky Go will remain usable. Additionally, they aim to sharpen the existing brands and their identity for customers as follows:
- RTL+ as a daily must-have for reality, soaps, and the best local entertainment.
- Sky for premium movies, series, and sports, as well as streaming partners.
- Sky Sport as the home for the most comprehensive and best live sports experience.
- WOW as a flexible streaming option for the content of the Sky and Sky Sport brands.
- RTL, VOX, ntv, and other TV brands for reach, relevance, news, and major shared live moments.
Further exact timings, such as for the first combo offers from Wow and RTL+, are still pending.
