Amazon is permanently shutting down its free streaming platform, Freevee. It has been announced that the app will be discontinued in August 2025. Users are currently receiving notifications directly within the application.
With the shutdown of the Freevee app in August, Amazon continues its course announced in 2024 to consolidate its streaming offerings on one platform. The content from the free, ad-supported service, including originals like “Jury Duty” and “Bosch: Legacy,” will move entirely to Prime Video. They will remain available for free there–even without a Prime membership.
Amazon Unifies Its Streaming Platforms
As reported by the U.S. magazine “TechCrunch,” Amazon is currently announcing the discontinuation of the Freevee app via in-app notification. The app will remain accessible until August 2025. After that, the service will be discontinued, and all content will be available exclusively on Prime Video–without a subscription, but still with ads.
The service originally launched in 2019 under the name IMDb TV and was renamed Freevee in 2022. It was available in the U.S., UK, Germany, and Austria, offering a wide range of free content–including through so-called FAST channels (Free Ad-supported Streaming TV). Freevee was especially popular for its free access to selected Prime Video originals. Since 2023, users without a subscription could watch up to 100 of these originals.

World’s most expensive series free for some users – but there’s a catch
Focus on Prime Video
Amazon announced back in November 2024 that it would phase out Freevee in the medium term to simplify the streaming experience. Prime Video had restructured earlier that year and has since included ads in its basic model. Only by paying an additional fee of 2.99 euros per month can users unlock an ad-free experience.

The end of Freevee comes against the backdrop of changing user habits. A recent Nielsen report shows that in May 2025, streaming services were used more than cable and network television for the first time. Free offerings like Pluto TV or Roku Channel play an important role in this. With the integration of Freevee into Prime Video, Amazon is apparently responding to these developments and aims to consolidate its content more efficiently on one platform.
