Amazon has definitively ended its free streaming platform Freevee. The app was discontinued in August 2025. Users had previously received notifications directly within the app.
Amazon Unifies Its Streaming Platforms
With the shutdown of the Freevee app in August, Amazon continues the course announced in 2024 to consolidate its streaming offerings on one platform. The content from the free, ad-supported service, including originals like “Jury Duty” or “Bosch: Legacy,” has fully migrated to Prime Video. There, they will remain available for free—even without a Prime membership, but still with ads.
The service originally launched in 2019 under the name IMDb TV and was renamed Freevee in 2022. It was available in the U.S., UK, Germany, and Austria, offering a wide range of free content, including through so-called FAST channels (Free Ad-supported Streaming TV). Freevee was especially popular for its free access to selected Prime Video originals. Since 2023, users without a subscription could watch up to 100 of these originals.
Focus on Prime Video
Amazon announced back in November 2024 that it would phase out Freevee to simplify the streaming experience. Prime Video had restructured earlier that year and has since included ads in its basic model. Only by paying an additional fee of 2.99 euros per month can users unlock an ad-free experience.
The end of Freevee comes against the backdrop of changing user habits. A recent Nielsen report shows that in May 2025, streaming services were used more than cable and network television for the first time. Free offerings like Pluto TV or the Roku Channel play an important role in this. By integrating Freevee into Prime Video, Amazon appears to be responding to these developments and aims to more efficiently consolidate its content on one platform.
