They are currently everywhere and have sparked an unparalleled buying trend: We’re talking about the so-called Labubus, small plush toys with a usually wide grin that looks as if they’ve concocted something devilish or criminal. And since they are so popular right now, it was only a matter of time before Hollywood took notice. Now, a first Labubu film is reportedly in the works.

Sony Secures Rights for Labubu Film

The Labubus are actually a creation from the children’s book series “The Monsters” by designer and illustrator Kasing Lung from Hong Kong. He conceived the little monsters for his stories in 2015, but it wasn’t until 2019 that the Chinese manufacturer Pop Mart brought them to market in their current form.

As reported exclusively by The Hollywood Reporter, the dream factory has taken note of the ongoing hype and responded accordingly. Sony Pictures is said to have secured the film rights to the plush toy brand. The goal is to produce a first film. If successful, a larger franchise could follow–it’s quite possible that in addition to more films, there could also be streaming series, shows, and more.

“KPop Demon Hunters” Creators Are Involved

The project is still in a very early planning stage, and at present, there are no personnel announcements. Neither producers nor filmmakers or stars are currently involved. However, it is certain that Sony Pictures’ animation department will make the film. A live-action film is therefore unlikely. Fans know that the project is in good hands.

Sony Pictures Animation has achieved massive success in recent years, including with the new “Spider-Verse” films and in 2025 with “KPop Demon Hunters.” Currently, it is not known whether the Labubu film will first hit theaters (like Spider-Man) or, like the “Demon Hunters,” go directly to a streaming service.

The Secret to Labubus’ Success

That the studio produced the K-Pop film of the moment fits well with the Labubu film. Among others, it was Lisa from the very popular K-Pop group Blackpink who drew attention to Labubus in 2024. But other stars also show their little creatures in public.

Additionally, the figures are sold in “blind boxes.” This means fans never know in advance which variant they are buying and must be surprised. This principle would also create a particularly heated secondary market, where collectors pay very high prices.

What the Labubu Film Could Be About

There are no content details yet. But what story could actually be told? Many may not be aware that several stories have already been created as part of Lung’s book series. He was inspired by Norse mythology for these, and according to his own statements, the Labubus are also female elves.

There is, among other things, a story in which a Labubu dates a skeleton named Tycoco and constantly teases him. Generally, the elves are considered friendly and helpful, but their good intentions often lead to chaos. As NPR wrote, there are more than 100 Labubus in the book templates alone. So, Sony has plenty of options for the planned Labubu film.
