The Best Films with Cameron Diaz
It’s somewhat fortunate that the California native even started acting. She began her career as a model, and it was going quite well for her: Cameron Diaz appeared in ads for Calvin Klein and Coca-Cola, among others. However, her modeling agent apparently saw something more in her and proactively suggested her for a film role …
The Mask (1994)
Director Chuck Russell knew he wanted to cast a model for the role of Tina Carlyle in “The Mask,” as he revealed to the entertainment magazine “Variety.” He originally had the charismatic Anna Nicole Smith in mind. But that didn’t quite fit 100 percent. He was immediately captivated by Cameron Diaz, however.
Hollywood funnyman Jim Carrey plays Stanley Ipkiss in “The Mask,” an unassuming and extremely shy bank employee who lacks self-confidence. But he can literally “put it on” overnight. He finds a mysterious mask that gives him superpowers (and a very daring appearance). Ipkiss’ life becomes wild and colorful, and he meets the beautiful singer Tina, who is, however, involved with a criminal. In the end, good triumphs. But before that, there’s a lot of suspense and even more laughter!
Stream: “The Mask” is included in Netflix’s free streaming offer. Amazon Prime customers can rent or buy the film for a fee.
My Best Friend’s Wedding (1997)
Julia Roberts plays Julianne Potter, a longtime close friend of Michael O’Neal (Dermot Mulroney)–but nothing more. One day, Michael tells her that he is getting married, and his heart belongs to the sweet Kimberly Wallace (Cameron Diaz). Julianne is beside herself: She doesn’t want to lose her best friend and suddenly believes she wants to be his wife. The couple, on the other hand, plans to have Julianne as the maid of honor and treats her like a guest of honor during the wedding preparations. They have no idea that Julianne is plotting nasty schemes to thwart their marital bliss.

There’s Something About Mary (1998)
It was the role she is probably most associated with to this day: the enchanting Mary (aka Cameron Diaz). The clumsy Ted (Ben Stiller) falls hopelessly in love with her in high school, but he is way out of her league with his braces and awkward manner. When she actually chooses him as her prom date, it seems like a dream come true for Ted. But the evening ends quite differently than expected–in an ambulance–and then their paths separate. Ted’s feelings remain, which his therapist has to hear about repeatedly over the years. Until Ted finally finds his Mary again and even seems to get a second chance. But a whole host of other men share his enthusiasm and try by all means to win the dream woman for themselves.
Stream: Disney+ customers can stream “There’s Something About Mary” for free. On platforms like Amazon Prime Video and in the Sky Store, it is available for a fee.
Any Given Sunday (1999)
One of the films with Cameron Diaz featuring an especially good cast (including Al Pacino, Dennis Quaid, Jamie Foxx). She plays Christina Pagniacci, who inherited the management of the Miami Sharks football team from her father and primarily pursues economic interests. She is particularly keen to prove herself and step out of the shadow of Pagniacci senior. In practice, this repeatedly brings her into conflict with the team’s coach (Pacino), especially because he sometimes has to make bold decisions.
Stream: The sports film is currently not available for free on any streaming service. It can be rented for around 3.99 euros in the Sky Store, for example.
Being John Malkovich (1999)
John Cusack portrays the protagonist Craig Schwartz–a puppeteer who takes on a somewhat odd job out of financial necessity. More interesting than its contents is a small door in the office building, which turns out to be a direct access to the brain of the real John Malkovich. Here, Schwartz sees a business opportunity: He starts offering tours into the actor’s consciousness for money. Cameron Diaz plays Lotte Schwartz, Craig’s (bored and frustrated) wife. She finds the access to the foreign reality quite convenient …
Stream: “Being John Malkovich” can be rented or purchased for a fee on various streaming services (Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV+, Magenta TV, etc.).
Charlie’s Angels (2000)
“Charlie’s Angels” is based on the cult TV series of the same name from the 1970s; here, Cameron Diaz, Lucy Liu, and Drew Barrymore replace the original actresses (Kate Jackson, Farrah Fawcett, Jaclyn Smith). They work for the employer Charlie (played by Bill Murray in the 2000 version), whom they initially know only as a voice from the answering machine. But Charlie becomes the center of attention, or rather in danger, when his three angels are supposed to solve the kidnapping of a billionaire. The film received a sequel in 2003.
Stream: “Charlie’s Angels” is included in the Sony Axn flat rate. On platforms like Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV+, it can be rented or purchased for a fee.
Vanilla Sky (2001)
Things are going great for David Aames (played by Tom Cruise). He runs a successful publishing empire he inherited from his late father. Financially, he is well off, enjoys prestige–and affection from model Julie Gianni (Cameron Diaz). But it all provides only superficial satisfaction. When he meets the free-spirited and warm, not to mention extremely attractive Sofia Serrano (Penelope Cruz), he falls head over heels in love with her; feelings that Julie could not evoke in him. But it was apparently quite different for her. Soon, the jilted lover shows him how serious she really was about the relationship, and David’s life takes a dramatic turn.
Stream: “Vanilla Sky” is included in the Paramount+ streaming offer. On other services (e.g., Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV+), the film can be rented or purchased for a fee.
In Her Shoes (2005)
The sisters Maggie (played by Cameron Diaz) and Rose (Toni Collette) couldn’t be more different–one a wild party girl, the other serious, a lawyer, and somewhat overthinking in her personal life. When Maggie temporarily stays with her sister, the big differences between them become even more apparent. A serious “incident”–Maggie sleeps with the wrong man–drives them completely apart. But then something happens that paves the way for them to develop a genuine familial relationship.
Stream: “In Her Shoes” is included in Disney+’s free streaming offer. On Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV+, and others, it is available for a fee.
The Holiday (2006)
A classic Nancy Meyers film, so it’s really something for the soul!
Iris (played by Kate Winslet) and Amanda (Cameron Diaz) are both fed up with men and need a break. Just not being in their familiar surroundings at Christmas! While searching for a solution, the women meet online, and everything falls into place: They swap homes. Iris goes to Los Angeles, and Amanda, the owner of an advertising agency, ends up in snowy London. Both want nothing to do with the opposite sex during their break. Or so they think …
Stream: Subscribers of Amazon Prime Video and Netflix can stream “The Holiday” for free.
What Happens in Vegas (2006)
Another film where Cameron Diaz needs a break–here as Joy McNally, whose fiancé leaves her in front of their friends. Jack Fuller (Ashton Kutcher), who has been fired, also needs to get away. The two meet when they arrive in Las Vegas–intending to leave their worries behind. Instead, they return with one more. Specifically: a ring on each finger. Normally, a marriage made in the gambling city can be annulled relatively easily. Not so in this amusing romcom.
Stream: “What Happens in Vegas” is included in Disney+’s streaming offer. On Amazon Prime Video and some other providers, it is available for a fee (around 3.99 euros to rent, 9.99 euros to buy).

My Sister’s Keeper (2009)
In “My Sister’s Keeper,” Cameron Diaz plays the role of Sara Fitzgerald, who, with her husband Brian, has two children. They deliberately have a third when their first daughter is diagnosed with leukemia, hoping that the youngest, Anna (Abigail Breslin), can save the older sister’s life. The two girls have a correspondingly close relationship, and the illness dominates the entire family life, bringing not only the expected but also some unforeseen interpersonal problems. A key part of the plot is Anna’s attempt to assert her right over her body against her parents. She wants to donate her kidney to the sick Rose.
Stream: “My Sister’s Keeper” is currently not available for free streaming. However, it can be rented or purchased for a fee from various providers (Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV+).
The Other Woman (2014)
Career woman Carly (Cameron Diaz) has been a player herself, taking what she liked from the buffet of men. Until she meets a guy who truly excites her. But in this case, it’s Mark (played by Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) who proves to be unreliable. In fact, Mark is even married (to Kate, played by Leslie Mann). When they find out about each other, an unusual friendship develops. Soon they discover there’s even a third woman (Amber, aka Kate Upton). What could be more fitting in this situation than to join forces and pool their intimate knowledge? The goal: a revenge that packs a punch.
