“The X-Files” is one of the most successful and well-known series of the ’90s, still boasting many fans today. However, since 2018, the mysterious FBI cases have been silent. But that’s about to change.
A reboot has been in the works for several years. In 2023, news first circulated that Ryan Coogler would be leading the project. Initial talks with the original series creator and showrunner Chris Carter took place back then. Then there was a two-year silence until a new sign of life appeared in April 2025. TECHBOOK summarizes the known facts and assesses the rumors.
Overview
When is the “X-Files” reboot coming?
The question that fans are likely most interested in is the release date of the new “X-Files” series. In fact, several dates and timeframes are circulating online, but they can all be dismissed as baseless rumors. For example, a Facebook profile mentioned a series start in 2026, while another absurdly claimed in June 2025 that the new episodes had started in February.
Meanwhile, “Blerd” casually lists October 2025. The fact is, no official date has been announced yet. Since the series is not even in active production, it’s generally hard to predict when the new episodes will appear. One thing is certain: 2025 is definitely out of the question, and even 2026, even if aiming for the end of the year, is highly unlikely. Therefore, we consider 2027 the earliest realistic date.
Who is involved in the “X-Files” reboot?
Not much is known about the personnel so far. Ryan Coogler is still on board and emphasized in April 2025 on the “Last Podcast on the Left” that the reboot will definitely be his next project. Beyond that, nothing is certain. It’s also unclear to what extent Chris Carter will be involved. So far, he has had several discussions with the “Black Panther” and “Creed” director, but whether he will act as a producer or writer is unknown.
There are no initial casting announcements yet. However, Coogler has already spoken with Gillian Anderson and hopes she will return as the iconic agent Dana Scully. Previously, according to a “Deadline” report, Anderson hinted she might make an appearance or two. “I’m not saying no,” she reportedly said. As for David Duchovny returning as Fox Mulder? “Screen Rant” reported in 2024 that he said he would just wait and see how the project develops.

Additionally, Carter previously revealed that the cast list is expected to be diverse. Who will tackle the new mysterious cases remains to be seen. According to early fan wishes and speculations, Lakeith Stanfield (“Knives Out”) and Zendaya (“Dune”) could take the lead roles. Michael B. Jordan is also a likely option–after all, he and Coogler have already made four films together.

What will it be about?
Concrete plot details are scarce at this point. Coogler only promised that some episodes will be “really scary” if he and his team do their job right. They aim to create something “truly great” that will especially satisfy real “X-Files” fans. So, they can look forward to many more supernatural phenomena.
Where will the “X-Files” reboot be streaming?
As “Variety” writes, the new series is being developed as part of a deal Coogler has with Disney. Accordingly, the new episodes will premiere exclusively on Disney+ in this country.
