Video game adaptations are booming in Hollywood, and alongside the major film studios, streaming services are also getting in on the action. Fans can already look forward to the next big project.
Netflix and Amazon, in particular, seem to be in a fierce competition to produce the best gaming adaptations. The retail giant has impressively demonstrated its understanding of video game content with “Fallout.” The company already has several hot projects in the works, including a “Wolfenstein” series now joining Amazon’s lineup.
“Wolfenstein” Series Planned at Amazon
This is reported exclusively by the U.S. industry magazine “Variety.” Some key personnel behind the scenes have already been announced. Patrick Somerville will be the creative force, serving as series creator, screenwriter, executive producer, and showrunner.
According to the report, Somerville has been a fan of the “Wolfenstein” games since childhood. He also brings extensive experience in series production, such as “Maniac” for Netflix, “Station Eleven” for HBO Max, and “The Leftovers.”
Among others, Jerk Gustafsson from the development studio MachineGames will also be an executive producer to advance the “Wolfenstein” series at Amazon. The production company Kilter Films is also on board, having previously successfully launched the “Fallout” series for Amazon. In addition to “Fallout” and “Wolfenstein,” Amazon is also planning series based on the massive game hits “Mass Effect,” “God of War,” and the tabletop game “Warhammer 40,000.”

What Fans Can Expect
There are no content details available at this early stage. However, anyone familiar with the franchise knows it will be extremely brutal, with a very specific enemy feeling the brunt of this harshness.
The official logline is simply: “The story of Nazi-killing is evergreen.” The series, launched in 1981, is set mostly during World War II in Nazi Germany, blending pure war settings with bizarre experiments and occult elements.

Since “Wolfenstein 3D” in 1992, the series has primarily been first-person shooters. The 1992 title, along with the original “Doom,” is considered a pioneering genre representative that helped define the core mechanics of modern first-person shooters.
“Wolfenstein” with a Long History of Censorship in Germany
Due to its themes surrounding World War II and Nazis, the “Wolfenstein” games have always faced challenges in the German market. Several parts were either indexed or even confiscated at the time–the latter meaning that further distribution was punishable. “Wolfenstein 3D,” for example, was indexed and confiscated from 1994 to 2019. Only after a re-evaluation in 2022 was the title allowed to be distributed uncut again.
In addition to the explicit depiction of violence, the display of Nazi symbols within the game world was often a topic of discussion. Because a right-wing extremist once distributed the game along with other Nazi content and was convicted for it, the view emerged that symbols like swastikas should generally not be shown in games. The gaming industry responded with self-censorship, which the USK and BPjM incorporated into their rating criteria.
Only since 2018, with the interpretation of the so-called social adequacy clause in the penal code, have many decisions been reversed. Discussions about “Wolfenstein” contributed significantly to this, as acknowledged by the USK. Since then, such symbols can also appear in games–though high age ratings remain inevitable.
