Film history is full of monstrosities and hideous creatures, and few figures in modern horror are as iconic as Freddy Krueger. The literally dream-walking serial killer with a grotesque scarred face and bladed glove has become an absolute cult figure through the “A Nightmare on Elm Street” films. Now, a remake of the original film is planned.
Craven Family to Reboot “A Nightmare on Elm Street”
As reported by the U.S. trade magazine “Variety,” the traditional studio Paramount has recently secured the rights to the script of the first “A Nightmare on Elm Street” from 1984. It is licensed by the heirs of Wes Craven, the legendary filmmaker who, in addition to “Nightmare,” also launched the “Scream” series.
Among those responsible are Craven’s widow, Iya Labunka, and his son, Jonathan Craven. Both will co-produce the new “A Nightmare on Elm Street,” along with Marc Toberoff. He is an attorney who helped the Craven family regain the rights to the original.
Even More Freddy Krueger
Specific plot details are currently unknown. However, it is already clear that the story will be set in the familiar narrative world and will be based on the 1984 film. Villain Freddy Krueger will once again be the focus. Whether actor Robert Englund will don the hat and glove again remains to be seen.
For Paramount, the new “A Nightmare on Elm Street” film will be produced under a new specialty label called Paramount Primal. They plan to work with both emerging and established filmmakers for films in the genres of action, horror, science fiction, and comedy. The budgeting for these projects is intended to be “smart”–meaning they will mostly be relatively low-cost endeavors.
