Eighty years ago, Swedish author Astrid Lindgren released the children’s book “Pippi Longstocking,” named after its protagonist, creating a literary icon that remains popular today. Generations have enjoyed her adventures with friends at Villa Villekulla, with the series produced in 1969 featuring Inger Nilsson in the lead role being particularly memorable. Now, a new series and film for the younger generation are set to be developed for “Pippi Longstocking.”
New “Pippi Longstocking” Series Will Be Animated
That’s according to the industry portal “Variety.” The French production studio Studiocanal aims to advance the project in collaboration with partners Heyday Films (known for the “Paddington” films), Submarine, Mediawan, and the Astrid Lindgren Company.
This time, there won’t be a new live-action series. Instead, a computer-animated format is planned. The scope is already known: 52 episodes, each 11 minutes long, are set to begin production in October. Sara Daddy (“Molly and Mack,” “Tulipop Tales”) will primarily be responsible for the scripts.
A New Film Is Also Planned
The stories Pippi will experience are not yet determined. It is only known that the girl with red hair, freckles, a monkey, and a horse arrives in a small town and causes quite a stir with her new friends.
In addition to the new series, a new feature film for “Pippi Longstocking” is also planned. “Harry Potter” producer David Heyman is involved in both projects. However, the film has been in development for seven years, and fresh updates are scarce.
Studiocanal clearly aims to expand its portfolio of major family brands with “Pippi Longstocking.” The “Paddington” films are the most successful family film franchise produced independently of Hollywood, with a box office gross of more than $800 million worldwide. The “Pippi Longstocking” books have sold over 90 million copies and have been translated into 80 languages. To this day, an additional 1.5 million copies are reportedly sold annually. The potential audience is more than large enough for success.
