Even before the first-ever split premiere of Season 4, Netflix officially confirmed a fifth season of “Stranger Things.” It’s no surprise, given that it’s one of the provider’s most successful productions. The ratings hit is definitely getting a continuation. But when will it arrive, and what will happen with Eleven and her friends? TECHBOOK has all the information and rumors about “Stranger Things” Season 5.

All Key Info at a Glance

  • “Stranger Things” Season 5 will be released in three parts.
  • The release dates are November 27, December 26, and January 1, 2026, at 2 a.m. German time.
  • “Stranger Things” Season 5 will consist of eight episodes.
  • The plot is set in 1987, at least a year after the events of Season 4.
  • Will could play a significant role in the fight against Vecna, along with Eleven and likely Max, who must live with the consequences of her sacrifice at the previous season finale.
  • The main cast returns, and Linda Hamilton has been confirmed as a notable new addition.

When Will “Stranger Things” Season 5 Continue?

Originally, “Stranger Things” Season 5 was supposed to follow directly after the fourth round. The plan was for both seasons to be filmed back-to-back. That didn’t happen, first due to the COVID-19 pandemic, then because of the Hollywood writers’ strike. About three and a half years after Season 4, the wait is almost over.

As reported by the U.S. industry magazine “Variety,” Netflix plans a three-part release. The first part is set to come out on November 26, 2025, with Part 2 of the fifth season following on Christmas, December 25. The grand finale will ring in the new year starting December 31. Due to the time difference, this results in release dates for Germany on November 27, December 26, and January 1. The new episodes will be available from 2 a.m. each night.

Netflix has now released the first official trailer for the fifth round of “Stranger Things.” It promises plenty of exciting and emotional moments and shows all the beloved characters in action. Many clear details about the content can’t be derived yet. In any case, the military is kept busy, and the demons of the Upside Down are hunting the protagonists.

Netflix has at least provided an official synopsis: In the fall of 1987, the small town of Hawkins is literally turned upside down as the gates to the Upside Down are open. For Mike (Finn Wolfhard), Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown), and the others, there’s only one task left–find and kill Vecna. Unfortunately, he and his plans have disappeared. Additionally, the military intensifies its search for Eleven. But the horror grows stronger. Everything leads to one last big battle where the friends must stick together once more.

How Long Will Season 5 Be?

The Duffer Brothers have already commented on the length of the planned final season of “Stranger Things.” While Season 4, with its split finale, comprised nine episodes, Season 5 is expected to be slightly shorter. A total of eight episodes with a runtime of ten hours is planned.

According to a new report from “Variety,” new details have emerged. The runtimes of the first four episodes, and thus the first half of the last season, have been revealed. The runtimes are as follows:

  • Episode 1 – 68 minutes
  • Episode 2 – 54 minutes
  • Episode 3 – 66 minutes
  • Episode 4 – 83 minutes

At least in the first half of the season, the episodes are shorter than previously thought. Initially, it was assumed each episode would be 90 to 120 minutes long. For the beginning, Season 5 will be even shorter than Season 4, where, except for one episode, each was at least 70 minutes long, with the last one reaching a whopping 142 minutes.

In early November 2024, Netflix released a small teaser for “Stranger Things” Season 5. Not much is shown, but the streaming service lists all the titles of the upcoming episodes.

At Least One Spin-off Planned

“Stranger Things” Season 5 is likely not the definitive end of the entire universe. The series appears to be getting a spin-off on Netflix. This was confirmed by the Duffer Brothers, who are behind the ratings hit. In the “Stranger Things” universe, there are “many exciting stories with new mysteries, new adventures, and new, unexpected heroes” to tell. Allegedly, several spin-offs of the popular series are being discussed. Depending on who survives Season 5, they might get their own series.

Almost confirmed is ananimated series for “Stranger Things” in the style of a cartoon. Content details about the project are not yet known, but Netflix has apparently already ordered a first season.

The Plot of “Stranger Things” Season 5

Warning, spoilers for the previous plot of “Stranger Things” follow.

Season 4 leaves us with plenty of destruction and darkness. The ominous One, aka Vecna, presents the group with a powerful villain. Since he couldn’t be defeated in Season 4, he will definitely be part of Season 5–in whatever physical form. Even before the start of this fourth season, the creators announced “the beginning of the end.” This end marks “Stranger Things” Season 5, as the upcoming season will likely be the last of the successful series.

Stranger Things Season 4
The group’s bond has grown over several seasons.

However, there will be at least one major time jump in the series. Netflix has confirmed that the plot is set in 1987, meaning at least a year has passed. This could finally address a major issue from “Stranger Things” Season 4. Due to the pandemic and the resulting delayed filming, the actors have naturally aged more than their characters. For comparison: lead actress Millie Bobby Brown was 12 years old during the filming of Season 1, the same age as her character Eleven.

Season 4 actually begins in the spring of 1986, two and a half years after Season 1. Brown is now 20, not 15–and this difference is noticeable. The same goes for her co-stars, like 19-year-old Finn Wolfhard, whose role is supposed to be 14. This can’t be changed for Season 4, but a time jump to “Stranger Things” Season 5 could solve the problem.

Since Season 4 ends with the Upside Down finally arriving in Hawkins, this will surely be one of the central points in “Stranger Things” Season 5. How will the town and, not least, our protagonists deal with the changed environment and the big rift? Whether and how Max awakens from her coma remains to be seen.

The Duffer Brothers definitely have a plan for the ultimate finale: “We want to return to many things from the first season. Many of the original pairings and groups we had in Season 1. It’s something beautiful to close such a circle.” This announcement should please fans, as the first season is immensely popular. Additionally, the creators of the series said that the end, specifically the last 30 minutes, is already set. Only the path to it needs to be fleshed out. Each character is supposed to find their own conclusion.

Producers Reveal Plans for Further Plot

Even though not much is publicly known about the further course of the plot of “Stranger Things,” the creators have long known how they will tie the threads together. At an event in Los Angeles, Ross Duffer announced that the scripts are almost finished. The plot apparently brought tears to the Netflix executives–if that doesn’t sound like a promisingly heart-wrenching finale!

I remember in the first season we were just amazed that Netflix allowed us to do it at all, but in the second season we really developed an overall plan and a backstory for all of it with the writers (…). But as important as the supernatural is, we now have so many characters–most of them are still alive–and it’s important to close these arcs. Many of these characters have grown since the first season, so it’s a balancing act to give them time to complete their character arcs while also tying up loose ends and making our final revelations.

The focus of “Stranger Things” Season 5 will likely not be entirely clear. The creators’ awareness of the importance of giving beloved characters a fitting end and telling their developments should please many fans. Season 5 is expected to incorporate elements from each previous season.

Writers Provide Insight into the First Episode of the New Season

The creators of the popular Netflix series are known for offering small glimpses into the work on the current season. They’ve already done this several times for Season 5, sharing the first three lines of the script on social media. The post on X (formerly Twitter) doesn’t reveal much. “Stranger Things” Season 5 will begin in darkness. Then “cold wind” is heard, followed by “moaning trees,” and finally the voice of a child singing “a familiar song.”

Will Could Be a Key Figure for “Stranger Things” Season 5

Speculation quickly arose. Many fans are sure this is a hint about Will Byers (Noah Schnapp). Early in the successful series, the then 12-year-old Will is taken to the shadow world. Perhaps the final season will show us more of Will’s experiences in the dark world–we haven’t seen much of it yet.

This theory is supported by a first (mini) teaser. Not much is shown, but it leaves plenty of room for speculation. The teaser shows the Starcourt Mall–or rather the “Scoops Ahoy” ice cream shop, where Robin (Maya Hawke) worked–completely in ruins.

Besides this impressive image, the blinking light bulbs are particularly interesting. Seasoned “Stranger Things” fans know that Will Byers tried to contact his friends and family this way during his time in the shadow world. Is this another hint at Will’s story in the dark parallel world?

The episode titles released in the November teaser also support this. The name of the second episode is “The Disappearance of.” In the video, red letters flicker below, but they can’t be read. This might be another reference to Will. The title of the very first episode of “Stranger Things” was “The Disappearance of Will Byers.” The episode titles contain another clue: Episode 4 is called “The Wizard.” Will played a wizard in the friends’ D&D campaign.

Either way, these small glimpses keep the fan community remarkably engaged; the anticipation for “Stranger Things” Season 5 remains high. Or as one X user aptly puts it: “You’re throwing us crumbs… please more!”

What We Know About the Cast

In terms of casting, not much is expected to change. Although there are some deaths in the finale of Season 4, the cast largely remains intact. After Max’s temporary death and rescue by Eleven, she is now in a coma and will certainly be part of the new season.

These actors are very likely to return to their roles:

  • Millie Bobby Brown as Eleven, later Jane Hopper, a teenager with extraordinary powers
  • Finn Wolfhard as Mike Wheeler
  • Gaten Matarazzo as Dustin Henderson
  • Caleb McLaughlin as Lucas Sinclair
  • Noah Schnapp as Will Byers, connected to the Upside Down and Vecna/the Mind Flayer since Season 1
  • Sadie Sink as Maxine “Max” Mayfield
  • Winona Ryder as Joyce Byers, mother of Will and Jonathan
  • David Harbour as Jim Hopper, Chief of Hawkins
  • Charlie Heaton as Jonathan Byers, Will’s older brother
  • Natalia Dyer as Nancy Wheeler, Mike’s older sister
  • Joe Keery as Steve Harrington
  • Maya Hawke as Robin Buckley
  • Brett Gelman as Murray Bauman, private detective
  • Jamie Campbell Bower as Vecna, originally Henry Creel, known as “One”

As in previous seasons, some new actors will likely join. Official information on this is not yet available.

Action Legend to Appear in “Stranger Things” Season 5

During the Netflix fan event Tudum, the streaming service introduced a new cast member for “Stranger Things.” The announcement itself was a hint. Arnold Schwarzenegger was there to present his own series “Fubar.” Seamlessly, the “Terminator” star transitioned to “Stranger Things”–and to his former colleague Linda Hamilton. With this, Netflix continues the retro approach in the series’ cast, bringing a well-known name on board.
