Netflix has announced the documentary “Aileen: Queen of the Serial Killers.” Serial killer Aileen Wuornos was convicted in the U.S. in the early 1990s and executed in 2002. Her case is among the most famous criminal stories in recent U.S. history and inspired numerous films.
Wuornos led a difficult life. She entered prostitution early and lived on the fringes of society. Between 1989 and 1990, she shot seven men in Florida. Her case is considered exceptional because she is one of the few female serial killers, and there was an accomplice—another unusual feature.
“Aileen: Queen of the Serial Killers” Planned for Netflix
The extraordinary story has been filmed several times. The most well-known is the movie “Monster” (2003), starring Charlize Theron, who won an Oscar for her portrayal. It focused heavily on Wuornos’ personal tragedy and her relationship with her partner and accomplice, Tiya Moore.
The new Netflix documentary “Aileen: Queen of the Serial Killers” takes a different focus. It uses previously unpublished interviews Wuornos gave on death row before her execution, supplemented by statements from people in her life and archival material—including contributions from former “Dateline” correspondent Michele Gillen.
Release Date and Production
The documentary will be released exclusively on Netflix on October 30, 2025. The BBC Studios Documentary Unit is producing the documentary, which is already known for award-winning true-crime formats such as “Life and Death Row.”
