These remain chaotic times for series fans with a Netflix subscription. While one title may be renewed for more seasons, the provider also regularly cancels projects, sometimes to everyone’s great surprise. Now, “Sweet Magnolias” has been hit after five seasons.
“Sweet Magnolias” Canceled by Netflix
This is now being reported by the U.S. industry magazine “Deadline.” According to them, Netflix has decided that “Sweet Magnolias” will end with the recently released fifth season.
At least JoAnna Garcia Swisher, one of the main actresses, and series creator Sheryl J. Anderson can look forward to a new Netflix project. This one is to be called “Ladies of the House” and is loosely based on the book of the same name.
Why Netflix Canceled the Series
For a series to reach a fifth season on Netflix is an achievement in itself. According to the report, solid viewership numbers and a manageable budget contributed to the relatively long run of “Sweet Magnolias.” As “Collider” explains, approximately 744 million streaming hours have been accumulated across all seasons.
Nevertheless, Netflix reportedly waited and closely monitored how the numbers for the now-final season developed. Indeed, the fifth season started with a 30 percent drop in viewership. Compared to other series, this is a moderate decline, as many titles are currently struggling with much sharper drops.

However, that might not have been the decisive factor. In fact, the new project “Ladies of the House” reportedly gained so much momentum internally that Netflix faced a choice: continue with it or renew “Sweet Magnolias.” They chose the former. This is unfortunate for fans. Although there are no particularly sensational twists at the end of season 5, several storylines remain unresolved.
