Those hoping for the grand finale of the fantasy epic “The Witcher” will apparently have to wait longer than expected. Several reports suggest that Netflix has postponed the release of the fifth and final season from 2026 to 2027. The reasons for this are not yet known.
Initially, the final season was part of Netflix’s preview of upcoming content at the beginning of the year. However, it is reportedly no longer included in the publicly available promotional materials and schedules for 2026. According to the industry portal “What’s on Netflix,” the release has been pushed to the following year. However, there is no new date for 2027 yet.
Filming Completed Months Ago
The potential delay is particularly surprising because the production of the last season has been completed for quite some time. According to the fan portal “Redanian Intelligence,” filming ended back in September 2025.
If Season 5 is indeed released only in 2027, more than 15 months would pass between the end of filming and the premiere of the new episodes.

Possible Reasons for the Delay
There is no official reason for the alleged schedule change. However, the extensive post-production effort is cited as a possible explanation. The fantasy series relies on numerous visual effects, elaborately staged battles, and digital effects for monsters and magic. Accordingly, editing and post-production are extensive.

Strategic reasons could also play a role. Netflix might deliberately push the series to 2027 to strengthen its lineup with an established original production. The second half of 2026 is reportedly already filled with several major Netflix productions.
The End of a Saga
The fifth season is set to conclude the story of Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri. Liam Hemsworth returns once more as Geralt, taking center stage as the lead actor for the second time in the series.
The journey for the Netflix production has not been without its ups and downs. The recasting of the main character from Henry Cavill to Hemsworth already sparked discussions. Additionally, the third season received mixed reactions from both critics and many viewers.
Despite all the controversies, “The Witcher” remains one of the streaming service’s larger brands. According to “What’s on Netflix,” the main series, its spin-offs, and other related content amassed a total of 1.76 billion streamed hours between 2023 and mid-2026.
