“Stranger Things” is over, but the series universe lives on. Netflix has now revealed concrete details about the live-action prequel “Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure,” set to release in 2028.
The new series delves much further into the past than the original “Stranger Things.” “Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure” is set in the 1950s, even before the play “Stranger Things: The First Shadow,” which is set in 1959.
An initial teaser makes the timeline even clearer. It features April 19, 1955, and Marion, Nevada. This new story also leaves behind the franchise’s most well-known setting: Instead of Hawkins, Indiana, a new location takes center stage. What exactly happens there, Netflix has not yet revealed.
Familiar Characters Are Not the Focus
The spin-off is also set to break away from the original series in terms of characters. Matt and Ross Duffer had already stated in 2025 that the series would start with new characters, essentially a “reset.” Instead of Eleven, Dustin, and the other familiar faces, new heroes and villains will drive the story.
Despite the fresh start, the core idea of “Stranger Things” is set to remain recognizable. The Duffer brothers described the project as a story about children and adventure with science fiction and fantasy elements. The creators consider the original characters’ storyline to be complete. “Other Worlds” thus expands the universe rather than simply continuing the story of the known group.
Renowned Director Takes on the First Episodes
“Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure” was developed by Matt Duffer, Ross Duffer, and Kate Trefry. Trefry is already well-acquainted with the franchise, having written for the original series and the play “Stranger Things: The First Shadow.” She will serve as the showrunner for the new series.

For the production, Netflix has enlisted a well-known filmmaker. Joe Wright, who directed “Pride & Prejudice,” “Atonement,” and “Darkest Hour,” will direct the first three episodes and serve as executive producer. Filming will take place in New Mexico. However, fans will have to wait to see what unfolds in Nevada in 1955: “Other Worlds: A Stranger Things Adventure” is slated to premiere on Netflix in 2028.
