The “Tomb Raider” games have been among the most well-known since the mid-1990s, thanks in part to protagonist Lara Croft. Over the years, there have been several film adaptations. Currently, fans are experiencing a rollercoaster of emotions. While a new “Tomb Raider” series is set to be developed by Amazon, another is ending on Netflix.
“Tomb Raider” Series Confirmed at Amazon with Sophie Turner
Numerous rumors have circulated in recent months, and now it’s official: As reported by the U.S. industry magazine “Variety,” a new “Tomb Raider” series will be developed on Amazon Prime Video. Initial reports about the project surfaced in 2023. At the same time, the retail giant officially confirmed that “Game of Thrones” star Sophie Turner will take on the lead role as archaeologist and adventurer Lara Croft.
There is even a specific start date for filming. The first take for the “Tomb Raider” series on Amazon Prime Video is set for January 19, 2026. The creative lead is Phoebe Waller-Bridge (“Fleabag”) as series creator, writer, and executive producer. She will be supported by Chad Hodge, who will also co-produce and serve as co-showrunner alongside Waller-Bridge.
The “Tomb Raider” series on Amazon is part of a larger deal between Crystal Dynamics and Amazon MGM Studios, as well as a pact between the production company Story Kitchen and Amazon. As part of this, new “Tomb Raider” stories are set to be developed as both series and films. It is expected that more projects will be announced in the future. In the past, there have been adaptations with Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft.
Netflix Cancels Its Own “Tomb Raider” Series
While one “Tomb Raider” series is soon to begin production, fans must bid farewell to another. As “Variety” separately reports, the animated series “Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft” will conclude after the upcoming second season. This will be released on December 11, 2025.
