Amazon has released the first trailer for the second season of its fantasy series “The Rings of Power” after months of waiting. There’s already a lot to see in it.
Amazon often invests a lot of money in its original productions. The most expensive title is the series “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.” For each episode of the first season, Amazon paid a whopping $58 million–making it the most expensive series in the world. After a period of relative quiet about the continuation, Amazon announced yesterday (May 13, 2024) that it would release a first trailer–and now it has appeared! TECHBOOK explains the details and what the trailer reveals about “The Rings of Power” Season 2.
First Trailer for “The Rings of Power” Season 2 Released
Currently, “Lord of the Rings” fans really can’t complain. Just a few days after the announcement that there will be a new movie about Gollum, Amazon has also released the first trailer for the second season of its own “Lord of the Rings” series: “The Rings of Power.” The first season premiered in early September 2022 on its in-house streaming service, Prime Video. Since then, only selected information has reached the public–you can find more in our overview article.
Perhaps the most important information from the “Rings of Power” trailer is the release date. According to the video, Season 2 is set to premiere on August 29, 2024. This is especially surprising because a release this year was not initially expected due to the complex production. However, if Amazon can stick to this date, Season 2 would start almost exactly two years after the release of Season 1 of “The Rings of Power.”
What the Trailer for the “Rings of Power” Sequel Shows
The new trailer has a clear focus content-wise but also seems to make an effort to show all the characters we’ve already met at least briefly.
Everything Revolves Around Sauron’s Rise
Right at the beginning, the big twist of the first season is picked up: Halbrand (Charlie Vickers) is Sauron and thus not only Galadriel’s (Morfydd Clark) personal arch-enemy but also the villain known from the films (and of course the books). We also see the transformed Southlands, where the newly formed Mordor with Mount Doom can now be clearly recognized. The trailer clearly puts the confrontation between the two, which was already built up in Season 1 of “Rings of Power,” in the spotlight.
We also get a preview of Sauron’s ability to transform, which is crucial in the original. He is able to change shape and seems, at least the trailer suggests, to successfully hide directly among the Elves in this way.
Already in the finale of Season 1, the three Elven Rings of Power were forged. We see these titular objects again in the trailer for Season 2 of “Rings of Power.” Additionally, Dwarven King Durin III is seen with a glowing ring–will the Dwarven rings be forged in Season 2?
Other Interesting Observations
We get another interesting piece of information somewhat hidden. At the end of the first season, Isildur (Max Baldry) was separated from his group and is therefore considered dead. However, since he still plays a central role in the War of the Ring according to Tolkien’s original, it was clear that the young man from Númenor is still alive. The trailer for “Rings of Power” Season 2 now confirms this. And it seems there will be an interesting encounter between him and fan favorite Arondir (Ismael Cruz Córdova).
There are a lot of characters to see in the trailer. However, the “Stranger” and Harfoot Nori (Markella Kavenagh) get very little screen time. Only a tiny scene seems to show them in a magical sandstorm. Perhaps Amazon will release another trailer about their whereabouts, or they simply play a minor role in the new season.
What is shown in the trailer allows some conclusions about the plot of Season 2. However, we can only speculate about the details, as there is no detailed original. Almost all storylines from the first season seem to be picked up again. Overall, the series “The Rings of Power” is supposed to encompass five seasons.
