Time travel, romance, drama, and beautiful landscapes–no series embodies these more than “Outlander.” It has been confirmed that the series will end after Season 8. But before the emotional final round, fans can look forward to an extensive Season 7!
The series “Outlander” is based on the successful “Highland Saga” by Diana Gabaldon and has been airing since 2014. In June 2023, the first part of the 7th season of the popular time-travel series, which revolves around the love and life of the Fraser family, premiered. Fans had to wait a while for the second part and thus the concluding episodes of the current season. But that wait is now over.
Overview
“Outlander” Season 7 continues
As early as March 2021, it was confirmed that there would be a new and thus 7th season of “Outlander.” The producing U.S. network Starz confirmed the continuation unusually early. Also surprising was the scope of the season, which includes a total of 16 new episodes. Only the 1st season had that many episodes; recently, it settled at 12 to 13 new episodes. The length of the 7th season is certainly due to the fact that Season 6 had to be cut short earlier than expected, leaving several storylines unfinished.
On June 16, 2023, the long-awaited first part of the 7th season of “Outlander” was released. However, only the first 8 episodes were initially available, and not all at once. Fans had to wait for the second block. But now the wait is over–the final eight episodes will air on Starz starting November 22, 2024.
Speaking of finales: It is already known that the following 8th season will be the last of the series. We have compiled all the known information in an overview article. And there is also good news! A spin-off is already in the works: “Blood of My Blood.” This will tell the story of Claire’s and Jamie’s parents.
Where to stream the new “Outlander” season
Soon after the U.S. premiere of “Outlander” Season 7 (Part 1), the new episodes were already available in Germany–even with German dubbing. Since Season 6, the legal situation has changed, as the contract with RTL Passion has expired. Previously, new episodes even premiered on free TV on VOX.
Season 7 is available for purchase on Amazon, among others. Individual episodes can be purchased for 2.99 euros (HD version) or 2.49 euros (SD version). Fans can also buy the entire season for a one-time fee of 29.99 euros (HD) or 24.99 euros (SD). With a total of 16 episodes, this results in a savings of 17.85 euros or 14.85 euros compared to buying individually, depending on the quality booked.
November 22 marks the U.S. premiere of the final episodes of the 7th season. When the second part will be available in Germany is not yet known. However, the episodes should be available for purchase on Amazon Video soon. It is also not yet finalized where “Outlander” Season 7 will be available in its entirety. Netflix is a strong candidate, where the complete 16 episodes of the 7th season can likely be seen in early or mid-2025.

What’s next in “Outlander” Season 7?
Since the series is based on a book series, which it has adhered to–with minor deviations–so far, the plot of “Outlander” Season 7 is no secret. Warning, spoilers follow for both the books and Season 6!
The “Highland” books and what happened so far
There are a total of nine volumes, with at least one more novel in the works according to Gabaldon. Volume 1 was published in 1991, and the 9th and most recent volume in 2021. So there is still plenty of material for the “Outlander” series, and more could be added. These are the novels published so far:
- 1st Book: “Outlander”
- 2nd Book: “Dragonfly in Amber”
- 3rd Book: “Voyager”
- 4th Book: “Drums of Autumn”
- 5th Book: “The Fiery Cross”
- 6th Book: “A Breath of Snow and Ashes”
- 7th Book: “An Echo in the Bone”
- 8th Book: “Written in My Own Heart’s Blood”
- 9th Book: “Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone”
Initially, each season adapted one of the novels, but since Season 5, this concept no longer fully applies. The storyline of the 6th book has been significantly stretched, and part of it is expected to be told in “Outlander” Season 7 and intertwined with Book 7.
Due to the pandemic-related shortening, many plot questions remain unanswered. Season 6 ended with the question of who is responsible for the death of Claire’s assistant Malva Christie and her unborn child. It is clear to all viewers that the protagonist had nothing to do with it despite her dream. Nevertheless, Claire was arrested and had to stand trial while her family feverishly searched for answers.
It turned out that Malva was killed by her own brother, Allan Christie, who also impregnated his half-sister. Allan is later killed by Ian with an arrow.
Brianna’s pregnancy set up another important plot point. Her second child is born with a heart defect that cannot be treated in the 18th century. For several seasons, we have also been dealing with the recurring prophecy about Claire and Jamie. The two are predicted to die soon in a fire. And these are just the unresolved storylines that actually take place in Book Six.
What to expect in the second part of “Outlander” Season 7
The books already provide clues about how the second part of “Outlander” Season 7 will unfold. For example, the Battle of Saratoga in the American Revolutionary War plays an important role and is also a central element in the novel. Brianna and Roger attempt to save their second child, who suffers from a severe heart defect, through time travel. A mysterious additional time traveler appears, and the family searches across time for a hidden treasure.
Jamie once again finds himself caught between sides, as he sympathizes with the American independence movement but is also bound to England by oath. To secretly support the rebels, he travels back to Scotland with Claire and Young Ian to retrieve his old printing press from Edinburgh. It is also already confirmed that Lord John Grey will return. However, it is likely that he will only encounter Claire for now.

It was already certain in advance that all the main actors would return to their roles in “Outlander” Season 7:

- Sophie Skelton as Brianna “Bree” MacKenzie, Claire’s and Jamie’s daughter
- Richard Rankin as Roger Wakefield/MacKenzie, Brianna’s husband
- John Bell as Ian Fraser Murray, Jamie’s nephew
There are also some returning actors in supporting roles:
- César Domboy as Fergus Claudel Fraser
- Lauren Lyle as Marsali MacKimmie Fraser, Fergus’ wife
- Mark Lewis Jones as Tom Christie
- Alexander Vlahos as Allan Christie, Mark’s son
- David Merry as Lord John Grey
Additionally, a new actor has been confirmed for the not insignificant role of Jamie’s illegitimate son Willie. Joey Phillips and Izzy-Meikle Small will also join the cast. The two play the sibling pair Denzell and Rachel Hunter in “Outlander” Season 7; they are Quakers. Denzell is a gifted surgeon, while his sister attracts the interest of both Ian and William.

Surprising return announced for “Outlander” Season 7
Through its own Instagram channel, Starz released a collage of new actors for the 7th season. However, not all of them are entirely new. The most well-known name on the list is likely Graham McTavish, who played Jamie’s uncle Dougal MacKenzie in the first two seasons. He is set to return to this role; however, Dougal is already deceased. So we will see McTavish either in flashbacks–or through time travel. The same could apply to his lover Geilis Duncan (played by Lotte Verbeek), who is also seen in the collage. Also returning is Nell Hudson as Laoghaire MacKenzie MacKimmie Fraser, Jamie’s ex-wife, who has already caused quite a stir. This would support the assumption that some Frasers return to Scotland.
The other character names in the post are also intriguing. Rob Cameron, for example, is a colleague of Brianna’s in the 20th century in the books, who makes life difficult for the MacKenzies. The recasting of Jamie’s sister Jenny also caused a stir. She was portrayed by Laura Donnelly in the early seasons. For “Outlander” Season 7, Kristin Atherton takes over.
