Britney Spears is one of the greatest pop stars of all time, there’s no doubt about it. Her music broke sales records, earned numerous awards, and elevated her to a pop icon of the 21st century. At the same time, her life has been marked by scandals and other challenging moments, many of which have been well-documented in the public eye. It’s the perfect material for a film project.
Britney Spears Film Moves Forward
Since 2024, a so-called biopic about Britney Spears has been in the works in Hollywood. It is set to be based on her 2023 memoir, “The Woman in Me,” which quickly became a bestseller with 1.1 million copies sold in the first week. The accompanying audiobook even became the fastest-selling title in the history of the publishing house Simon & Schuster.
As the U.S. industry magazine “Variety” now reports, there is finally a new sign of life for the project after two years of silence. It is reported that Liz Meriwether has been signed on as the screenwriter.
This marks another important step toward production. Meriwether brings a wealth of experience and was instrumental in the creation of “New Girl” and “Dying for Sex,” among others. The Disney+ miniseries “The Dropout” also stems from her genius. With WGA and PGA awards and four Emmy nominations, she is already highly decorated.

“Wicked” Creators on Board
Meriwether joins an already prominent team behind the scenes. Producer Marc Platt (“La La Land”) has been nominated for an Oscar four times and will handle the business side of the project. Director Jon M. Chu (“Wicked”) will take the creative helm.
However, the most important casting decision—the lead role of Britney Spears—remains unclear. Colleagues at BILD have already speculated about the first possible candidates.
