It’s official: The most successful series of the ’90s is back. A reboot of “Baywatch” is expected in 2026/2027. The iconic lifeguard show is set to be reimagined while preserving the legacy of the original series–sun, sand, and excitement included.
For fans, this means not just a return to red swimsuits and dramatic rescues. It opens up the possibility of reinterpreting the familiar concept, and because “Baywatch” once became a global phenomenon, expectations are high.
Incidentally, the original series is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video, partially with a subscription. Those without a subscription can try it for free for 30 days:
Comeback on the Beach
According to “Variety,” the “Baywatch” reboot will consist of twelve episodes. Fremantle is responsible for the production in collaboration with Fox. Matt Nix, known as the creator of “Burn Notice,” will take on the creative leadership of the series as showrunner. Additionally, the original creators Michael Berk, Greg Bonann, and Doug Schwartz are back on board as producers.
Michael Thorn, president of Fox Television Networks, stated that the goal is to retain the typical rescue missions and iconic beach setting while integrating new themes and modern storytelling. This aims to appeal to both longtime fans and a new generation of viewers. The reboot could also end up on the streaming service Disney+.
The Legacy of “Baywatch”
The footsteps are large: “Baywatch” started in 1989 and ran for eleven seasons with nearly 250 episodes. At its peak, more than 1.1 billion people in over 200 countries tuned in within a week. This makes the lifeguard series one of the most successful in the world.
