Typically, it’s new films with well-known stars or big family movies that drive box office success. But the fact that an 86-year-old classic is suddenly raking in a lot of money is something no fan could have anticipated. However, it’s not available in theaters in Germany. That’s why we’re telling you where you can stream “The Wizard of Oz.”
Why “The Wizard of Oz” is Suddenly a Hit Again
“The Wizard of Oz” from 1939 is one of the greatest and most influential milestones in film history, still boasting many fans, frequently quoted, and having spawned several spin-offs. Last year’s hit “Wicked,” for example, is set in the same narrative universe. But while “The Wizard of Oz” can currently only be streamed or purchased physically in Germany, the situation is different in the U.S.—specifically in Las Vegas.
That’s because the newly opened, spherical Sphere arena, which features a massive LED screen inside, is currently showing “The Wizard of Oz” in a special version, as reported by “Bloomberg.” Nearly $100 million was invested in this—and half an hour of the runtime was cut. The result is said to resemble a theme park attraction more than a film, but the success speaks for itself.
Currently, 4,000 to 5,000 tourists attend each screening daily, despite average ticket prices of nearly $200 (about 170 euros). The renewed popularity of the old film is generating up to $2 million in revenue per day. As part of the Sphere’s permanent program, an insider expects hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue for 2026. By the time “Oz” leaves Las Vegas, this special version could have grossed more than a billion dollars. These are figures usually associated only with the biggest current Hollywood blockbusters.
Streaming “The Wizard of Oz” with a VPN
According to the report, the Sphere is particularly effective as a film magnet. The arena makes twice as much money from screenings as it does from concerts, for example. But if you don’t want to book a flight to Las Vegas quickly, you can stream “The Wizard of Oz.” Currently (as of September 10, 2025), it is not available on any German streaming service subscription. However, platforms like Amazon Prime Video or the Sky Store offer the option to rent or buy the film as a stream.
For those who are a bit more tech-savvy, a VPN can be used to try their luck on international platforms. As stated on “Stream with VPN,” “The Wizard of Oz” can currently be streamed on KKTV—in Hong Kong or Taiwan. Our own research shows that this is free there, but only up to a resolution of 480p. For better quality, however, a VIP access is required.

But if you don’t want to go this route either, you can simply wait. A classic as big as “The Wizard of Oz” will surely appear in a German-language subscription sooner or later.
