Currently, two new “The Lord of the Rings” films are in the works. While one project is still in its early stages, “The Hunt for Gollum” is much further along. Stars of the upcoming blockbuster have now been officially announced—with a major surprise: Jamie Dornan will be the new Aragorn.
Popular Returnees in New “Lord of the Rings” Film
This ends weeks and months of rumors, and finally, there is certainty. Some cast members were already confirmed, while others were the subject of speculation. Now, according to “Variety,” it’s official, and fans can look forward to both popular returnees and new faces.
The familiar heroes include Ian McKellen as Gandalf and Elijah Wood as Frodo. The latter previously emphasized in an interview with the “Sunday Times” that he doesn’t want anyone else to play the role as long as he is alive. Andy Serkis returns as Gollum and also directs “The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum,” the current original title. Lee Pace also returns as the Elven King Thranduil.

Prominent Newcomers in the Hunt for Gollum
It was also previously known that Oscar winner Kate Winslet has joined the project as Marigol. She is not the only new star in the new “Lord of the Rings” film. Leo Woodall takes on the role of Halvard, and “50 Shades of Grey” star Jamie Dornan plays Strider, who later turns out to be Aragorn.
This particular casting choice is likely to cause a stir. Until recently, it was unclear who would succeed Viggo Mortensen in his iconic role. According to circulating rumors, even Woodall was considered, but he now takes on a different role.
Mortensen Possibly Too Old
Mortensen himself expressed interest in returning in the past, but only if it made sense for both him and the character. He also acknowledged his age, suggesting it might make him unsuitable.

Indeed, “The Hunt for Gollum” takes place before the events of “The Fellowship of the Ring.” Accordingly, the actor portraying the sword-wielding Aragorn should be younger and fitter. The German release date for the new “Lord of the Rings” film is currently set for December 16, 2027.
