The Most Successful Animated Films of All Time
Disney’s Films Are True Classics
The “Masterpiece” series includes numerous films. The first was “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” in 1937. For the then-young studio, the risk and effort were enormous, but it paid off. The film is now considered one of the most significant animated films of all time and ranks tenth on the inflation-adjusted list of the most successful films with $1.7 billion.
Looking at the overall box office results of Disney films, “Frozen 2” (2019) leads ahead of the first part (2013) and “The Lion King” (1994). And the films were not only a financial success for the studio; founder Walt Disney collected an impressive 26 Oscars during his lifetime! Certainly a reason for the great success of the films. The most recent film in the series is “Wish,” which premiered in theaters at the end of November 2023–albeit with only moderate success.
Disney Reinvents Itself
With “Tangled” (“Rapunzel”), Disney’s era of animated films began in 2010. As part of this innovation, character design has especially changed. But themes and conflicts around family have also increasingly taken center stage since then. The best examples are “Frozen” with the two sisters Anna and Elsa, and “Encanto,” where Mirabelle comes into conflict with the grandmotherly family matriarch.
Furthermore, Disney is increasingly exploring non-European and non-U.S. cultures as settings and is striving for more diversity among its main characters. This began with “Big Hero 6” in 2014, set in the Japanese-American fantasy city of San Fransokyo, followed by “Moana” (2016), “Raya and the Last Dragon,” and “Encanto” (both 2021), and “Wish” (2023).
