When people think of AVM, they likely first think of Fritzboxes and perhaps devices like phones or repeaters. However, the Berlin-based manufacturer is continuously expanding its smart home division and will unveil a device at IFA 2024 that has never been seen before.
The smart home sector has been a significant focus for AVM for years. The Fritzboxes serve as the home hub, but the manufacturer also offers various compatible devices. Most products communicate via DECT ULE, but with the support of the new Matter standard, compatibility with numerous devices, control centers, and apps from other manufacturers is enhanced. In addition to smart sockets, switches, or lamps, a completely new device is now being introduced. At the same time, AVM is announcing important news in the smart home sector at IFA 2024.
AVM Renames Smart Home
One of AVM’s major announcements at IFA 2024 is the renaming of its smart home division. Previously known as Fritz!DECT, the system will now be called Fritz!Smart. Simultaneously, the manufacturer will categorize the various products into four areas.
In the Fritz!Smart Energy category, AVM will now group devices and services related to energy, such as smart sockets. Fritz!Smart Thermo will include radiator thermostats, while Fritz!Smart Control will encompass smart home switches. Lamps and lighting will be found in the Fritz!Smart Light category. Additionally, the Fritz!Smart Gateway will support Zigbee and Matter integration.
As part of this realignment, AVM is renaming already known smart home products. However, the technical specifications remain unchanged.

Fritz!Smart Energy 250 Makes Its Debut
The new names make it immediately clear which product category they belong to. This is also true for a device that AVM has not previously offered. Under the name Fritz!Smart Energy 250, the manufacturer is introducing a sensor for digital electricity meters for the first time, allowing users to monitor and analyze power consumption.

The sensor connects to the Fritzbox via DECT and can be magnetically attached to the digital electricity meter. It reads consumption data via infrared and transmits it to the smart home. Users can access the data either through the Fritzbox menu (Fritz!OS) or via MyFritz!Net. The device is powered by batteries or a USB connection.
