Amazon is bringing Alexa+ to Germany with a comprehensive AI update for its voice assistant. After a test phase in the U.S., early access is now available here as well. The revamped Alexa understands more, responds more naturally, and significantly expands its range of functions, as we observed in an initial test. However, not everything runs smoothly yet–and for some users, it will become a paid service in the future.

The launch of Alexa+ in Germany is initially part of an early access program. Users must register via a special website and will then receive an invitation. Alternatively, new devices like the Echo Show 11 or the Echo Dot Max already come equipped with Alexa+. During the test phase, usage remains free. After it ends, access to Alexa+ is covered by the Prime membership, but users without a subscription will then pay 23 euros per month.

Initially compatible only with Amazon devices

In a conversation with TECHBOOK, Amazon explains that about 75 percent of Echo devices are compatible with Alexa+. Several older models are excluded, including the first-generation Echo Dot, Echo, Echo Plus, Echo Show, and Echo Spot.

In addition to the classic speakers, Alexa+ also works on selected Fire TV devices such as the second-generation Fire TV Stick HD, the second-generation Fire TV Stick 4K Plus, and current Amazon TVs.

However, smart speakers from other manufacturers like Sonos or JBL are not supported. Amazon did not confirm whether this will change soon. There is a special integration in the automotive sector: In the BMW iX3, Alexa+ is integrated as the “BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant.” Activation is done via “Hey BMW” instead of the usual voice commands.

Enhanced AI features in everyday life

We have reported on Alexa+ several times in advance. The new AI-supported voice assistant is intended to enable much more natural conversations than the previous, rather static version. Conversations with Alexa+ should feel less like a series of commands and more like a dialogue. It is also important that it can remember information users disclose in the dialogue. This includes individual preferences for food (including intolerances), home temperature, or hobbies. Based on this information about the conversation partner, Alexa+ can suggest recipes, plan birthdays or anniversaries, and make reservations and corresponding calendar entries. Even gift wishes can be stored and ordered directly by voice.

For all this, Alexa+ processes content from various sources. Users can send emails to the assistant, from which it extracts relevant information. Images can also be analyzed, for example, using the camera of an Echo Show to find objects or evaluate one’s outfit. Even plant identification can be done by reading and evaluating images.

In the smart home sector, Alexa+ significantly expands its capabilities. In conjunction with Ring cameras, it can check whether certain tasks have been completed, such as taking out the trash or feeding a pet. The AI also interprets abstract commands like “create a cozy atmosphere” and adjusts lighting and room climate accordingly. Routines can be fully created by voice without needing a separate app. If desired, all routines can also be viewed and managed.

First impressions from practice

Amazon gave us the opportunity to get to know and try out Alexa+ during an initial presentation. The new features were demonstrated at various stations. The object recognition via cameras was particularly convincing. Overall, the responses seemed much more natural compared to the previous Alexa. At times, however, the tone was a bit too hyped and cheerful for our taste. Additionally, there was occasionally a pause for thought, where Alexa apparently had to process the data necessary for the response. However, these did not really disturb. In some areas, the voice quality still lags behind systems like ChatGPT.

Overall, Alexa+ shows significant progress at first glance and expands the role of the voice assistant into a comprehensive everyday helper with a wide range of functions and high device compatibility. At the same time, there are still weaknesses in speed and dialogue quality, as well as limitations in use without a Prime subscription.
