ING is fundamentally changing its online banking login process. Customers will need to set a new username and password. According to the bank, those who do not make the switch in time risk having issues accessing their accounts. A mandatory introduction has already been announced.

Whether it’s transferring money, checking account balances, or retrieving credit card statements, many banking transactions today are conducted digitally via app or browser. This access is now being reorganized at ING. The institution is currently informing its customers in writing about the upcoming change.

The core of the change is a new login procedure. Until now, logging in required an access number and an online banking PIN. The bank will replace this system with a user-selected username and password. Through this new access system, all accounts and banking products will be accessible. This includes checking accounts, savings accounts, investment accounts, and credit cards. Previously, these were partially accessible through separate access numbers.

One-Time Adjustment of Access Data

For customers, the change primarily means a one-time reset of their access data. Those currently logging into online banking are often already being notified of the change. The new access can be set up directly. Users will establish an individual username and create a new password for future logins. The previous access data will then become invalid.

Confirmation via App or photoTAN

After setup, additional authorization is required. This is done either through the ING app or using a photoTAN generator. This involves a device or function that generates transaction numbers to confirm banking operations. Only after this confirmation is the new access fully activated.

The security measure also means that only the device used for authorization remains logged in. All other previously connected devices will be automatically logged out of online banking.

Currently, setting up the new login can still be partially skipped. However, this will not be possible permanently. In the coming months, ING plans to make the change mandatory, although the bank has not yet specified an exact date. What is certain is that without a new username and password, access to the account could be temporarily blocked.

At the same time, the bank warns of increased phishing risks. Criminals often exploit changes in the banking sector for fraudulent emails or SMS to obtain access to data. Customers should therefore only use the official ING app or the bank’s known website and avoid clicking on links from unknown messages.
