For about 20 years, many discussions on Reddit could be followed without an account. Now, the platform plans to partially close its open doors.

For many internet users, Reddit has long been a key destination for specific questions and problems. In numerous communities, people exchange ideas on technology, travel, hobbies, and other topics. Most of these discussions can still be read without a Reddit account. The company wants to change that.

Reddit CEO Steve Huffman presented the plans on October 29, 2026, in a post on the platform. Initial tests requiring login are planned for the fourth quarter of 2026 in selected countries outside the U.S. The countries participating have not been disclosed. Reddit has also not yet announced a date for a potential worldwide rollout.

Reddit aims to better protect content

The plans are partly driven by the handling of AI services. According to Huffman, these services primarily access publicly available Reddit content without logging in. The platform wants to have more control over how its data is used. Reddit already signed licensing agreements with Google and OpenAI in 2024 to regulate content usage. In 2025, the company took legal action against Anthropic and Perplexity for allegedly unauthorized data use.

At the same time, Reddit expects benefits for its advertising business. Registered users reveal more about their interests through their activities. This allows the platform to display more relevant ads and personalized recommendations. This is intended to strengthen user engagement with Reddit. As fewer visitors come through search engines, the company aims to encourage more people to visit Reddit directly on a regular basis.

Some content will remain accessible without an account

Reddit will not completely disappear behind a login barrier. Huffman considers a freely accessible homepage important. Additionally, those who arrive at a specific post via a search engine or shared link should be able to view it without logging in. Which other areas will require an account will be determined by the tests.

There is also the incognito mode of the Reddit app, which allows anonymous reading and searching, with Reddit stating that activities are not linked to the respective account. However, commenting and voting do not work in this mode. Whether logging into the app will be required for its use in the future is still undecided. Reddit will not require a real name even with regular registration.
