Unlike Google Maps, Apple Maps could previously only be used via the app on the iPhone, iPad, or Mac. There was no browser connection. But that is now changing.
Apple has deeply integrated its in-house mapping service into its own ecosystem. On the iPhone and iPad, or alternatively on the Mac, Apple Maps, as the service is called in English, can be easily used via apps. However, using it through a browser on a PC or Android device was not previously intended. At least in one aspect, Apple is now providing a solution and is taking new paths in the future.
Apple Maps now usable on Windows PCs
From now on, Apple Maps can also be accessed via the browser. For now, this is still a beta test, exclusively in English. However, the test version already shows well how Apple Maps looks and functions in the browser. Apple has already announced plans to make its mapping service available in more languages and for more browsers and platforms. However, no specific timeline was provided.
The beta version is initially supported by the Safari and Chrome browsers for Mac and iPad, but it can also be accessed via Chrome and Edge on Windows PCs. Thus, Apple is leaving its own product world for the first time.
These features are offered by Apple Maps in the browser
When you open Apple Maps in the browser, you initially land directly in Frankfurt am Main. You can zoom in and out of the map with the mouse and switch views using the icon displayed at the top right. The default standard view, as well as hybrid and satellite, are offered.
Searching for locations and planning routes is possible via the left menu. While the location search worked flawlessly during the first test and previous search queries are even saved under “Recent,” we were not yet able to navigate as desired at this time. Inputs for start, destination, time, and mode of transport (currently only car or on foot) are possible, but the Enter key to start the request is missing.

The “Guides” option, which shows recommended places and sights, is also still limited. If you select Europe here, Apple Maps only shows places in London and Paris. The continents of Asia, Africa, and South America are also missing from the selection.
The examples show that Apple Maps in the browser is still only usable to a limited extent. However, in the coming months, the company plans to introduce additional features like Look Around–a kind of Street View.
