On the Windows 11 lock screen, there’s a detail that can easily be overlooked in everyday use. The displayed time doesn’t always match the actual time precisely. Especially when the minute changes, the display can lag slightly.
This behavior is not random. Microsoft has clarified that it’s not a typical error but a deliberate decision in system design.
Feature of the Secure Lockscreen
The discrepancy affects only the so-called Secure Lockscreen. This is activated when the computer is locked with Ctrl + Alt + Delete or directly after startup, as long as no user is logged in. According to Microsoft, the minute display here can be delayed by up to 30 seconds. This means the clock switches noticeably after the actual minute change. For users, this seems like an error, but it’s technically based.

Reason for the Time Discrepancy
The reason for this delay lies in the internal functionality. In this mode, the time is not directly linked to the internal system clock but is tied to a system account. As a result, updates occur at fixed intervals of 30 seconds. A more precise display is not intended in this scenario, even though the system itself always knows the exact time.
It’s different with the usual lock screen, which is accessed with the Windows key + L. Here, the display is directly linked to the active user session. The clock updates dynamically and adjusts almost without delay to the minute change. The discrepancy thus occurs only in a specific use case.

Impact on the System
The delayed display has no negative effects on the operating system’s functionality. The internal clock of the Windows kernel continues to work precisely. Time-critical processes such as logs or synchronizations use the correct time values. The discrepancy only affects the display on the screen and has no impact on system performance or security.
