Microsoft 365 has fixed an issue in Outlook Classic that could cause crashes when composing emails. Affected users report that Outlook closes as soon as they right-click in the message body. The error occurs with new messages, replies, and forwards.
Right-click Causes Outlook to Crash
Both in the Microsoft forums and on Reddit, users have been reporting a peculiar problem with Outlook Classic since the end of June: A right-click to open the context menu in the email body causes the client to crash.
The error occurs regardless of whether text has already been entered. However, only the message body is affected. In the subject line, address fields, folders, and navigation pane, the context menu opens as usual.
According to users, Outlook Classic in Microsoft 365 with version 2605 (Build 20026.20182) is affected. The version was released on June 16, 2026, according to Microsoft’s update history.
Microsoft Fixes the Issue with an Update
Several affected users report that usual measures do not help. These include Outlook’s safe mode, a new Outlook profile, and disabling spell check. Apparently, the problem also occurs with fresh installations, which argues against an add-in as the cause.
In Microsoft’s Q&A forum, an external employee stated that the company is already examining the error. The solution is to either roll back to Build 20026.20168 or update to version 2606 (Build 20131.20090).
The version has been available in the update channels for Microsoft 365 since June 26. Affected users should update Outlook or Microsoft 365 to the latest build of their channel.

Several users mention version 2606 Build 20131.20090 as a working solution. A forum post accepted by the original poster confirms that updating to the latest Office version has helped.
The Office version can be checked in Outlook via “File” and “Office Account.” Under “Update Options,” the “Update Now” function is available. Some users also report that an online repair of Office triggered the update.
