Microsoft is developing a new platform for the use of AI agents. At the Microsoft Build 2026 developer conference, held on June 2 and 3, the company introduced Project Solara for the first time. The solution takes a different approach than traditional computer platforms. Instead of using applications through individual apps, users will communicate directly with AI assistants via voice. Notably, the technical foundation is different: Microsoft is using Android for Solara, not Windows.
Android as the Basis for AI Agents
Project Solara was specifically developed for intelligent AI agents. Microsoft is collaborating with Qualcomm and MediaTek. The goal is a platform that closely links local hardware with services from the Azure cloud. The offering is primarily aimed at businesses. For device management and security, the platform supports features like Entra ID and Intune.
The operation is expected to differ significantly from current systems. Instead of opening individual programs, users will delegate tasks directly to digital assistants, which will then carry out the desired steps.
AI Creates the User Interface Itself
A central element of Project Solara is the so-called Just-in-Time UI. Here, the AI automatically generates the appropriate user interface. It takes into account the specific device, display size, and input method used.
This offers an advantage for developers: Applications no longer need to be adapted for different screen sizes. The display is generated dynamically during use.

In the background, various specialized agents are at work. The so-called “Priority Agent” highlights important appointments. The “Facilitator” records meetings and automatically creates meeting minutes. Users do not need to start additional programs for this.

Microsoft Shows First Solara Devices
To illustrate the platform, Microsoft presented two reference devices. One is a stationary desk system with a processor from MediaTek. The device uses facial recognition via Hello for Business for login.
The system can be used independently. Alternatively, it can be used as a Windows 365 client via USB-C to project a full cloud PC onto an external monitor.
Microsoft also showcased a portable badge with a Qualcomm chip. An integrated camera captures the environment and provides additional context information to the AI agents. A fingerprint sensor is used for login. A dedicated hardware button allows users to completely disable the microphones.
Pilot Project Launches in the U.S.
In the coming months, Microsoft plans to test the platform as part of a pilot project. Companies involved include Target and Best Buy.
Whether the Solara devices will later be available outside the U.S. has not yet been announced by Microsoft. It is also unclear when the hardware might appear in other markets.
