Robots are increasingly being developed for dangerous tasks. However, the Threehalves model (translated as “three halves”) stands out significantly from the competition. The robot, about two meters tall, has four legs, a humanoid upper body, and a head that resembles a goat. With its glowing eyes and mountable tools, the machine looks more like a character from a video game than a traditional industrial robot.

Behind the project is the California-based startup Satyress. The company is developing Threehalves for use in environments that are too dangerous or difficult for humans to access. These include wildfires, collapsed buildings, mudslides, or contaminated industrial sites.

Why Threehalves Moves on Four Legs

While many modern robots walk on two legs, Satyress opts for a four-legged base. This is intended to provide more stability and allow the system to move in difficult terrain. The humanoid upper body is retained to make operation easier and handling tools more familiar.

Interchangeable Tools Without AI Use

A unique feature of Threehalves is its arms. Instead of traditional human-like hands, the machine uses modular tool connectors. This allows different devices to be mounted depending on the task. Previous presentations have shown chainsaws, drills, and pneumatic tools. The robot thus acts more as a mobile work platform for specialized tasks.

Despite its futuristic appearance, Threehalves does not operate autonomously. The machine is remotely controlled by a human. Cameras on the head transmit the robot’s view to the operator. According to Satyress, this concept was deliberately chosen. Humans are to retain control and act as if they were on-site while the robot takes over the dangerous work. This allows familiar tools to be used without complex AI systems having to take control.

Unusually Open Approach to Risks

As striking as the robot’s design is the company’s communication. While other manufacturers primarily highlight the performance of their systems, Satyress openly discusses danger. On its website, the company even describes the robot as more dangerous than it appears at first glance.

The reason is clear. A machine weighing several hundred kilograms that works with powerful tools can become a hazard in an emergency. Therefore, various safety mechanisms have been integrated to quickly shut down the robot.

Multiple Emergency Shutdowns Onboard

For emergencies, Threehalves is equipped with multiple safety levels. Certain locks and pressure systems can restrict or completely disable the machine’s mobility.

Additionally, the robot uses compressed air tanks in the torso area. If the system is damaged or deliberately vented, the machine loses the necessary operating pressure and comes to a halt. This is intended to prevent a defect from leading to uncontrolled movements.
