The digital avatars were supposed to bring more personality to the messenger. Now, WhatsApp is apparently pulling the plug–and that’s after just a few years.
WhatsApp is parting ways with a feature that never really became central to the messenger: the avatars. While the focus in everyday use is clearly on quick communication (writing messages, reacting, sending pictures), additional features often struggle. According to “WABetaInfo,” WhatsApp is therefore gradually ending support for avatars on Android and iOS.
Limitations on Profile Pictures and Stickers
With the end of the feature, key usage options are eliminated: Avatars can no longer be used as profile pictures, and personalized stickers via the keyboard are no longer available. However, content already sent remains and will continue to be displayed in chats. Saved or recently used stickers may still appear for now–but new content will no longer be added.

Gradual Shutdown Depending on Account
Originally, WhatsApp introduced avatars in 2022 as a new form of self-expression and promised further expansions. The fact that the feature is now disappearing suggests it was hardly used in the daily lives of many users. The shutdown is staggered: While some users no longer have access, others see corresponding notices in the settings under “Avatar.”
