Anthropic is among the leading companies in the field of artificial intelligence. Nevertheless, the company is now advocating for slowing down the development of particularly powerful AI systems. According to the company, modern models could develop capabilities that may be difficult to control in the long term.
Anthropic Sees Risks in Powerful AI
The U.S. company Anthropic, known as the developer of the Claude AI family, is calling for a worldwide pause in the development of the most powerful AI systems. In a recent report, the company describes slowing down so-called frontier AI as “probably a good thing.”
Anthropic cites the increasing capabilities of modern AI models as a reason. The company believes these could become difficult to control in the long term. At the same time, the developers argue that research, safety measures, and legal regulations currently cannot keep pace with the speed of technological development.
International Cooperation as a Prerequisite
From Anthropic’s perspective, a development halt can only be effective if all major players act together. Particularly, the U.S. and China would need to agree on common rules and monitor their compliance.
The company considers a solo effort by individual providers to be of little use. If only one company slows its development, other providers could use the resulting lead to strengthen their position. This is precisely why Anthropic views an international agreement as challenging. AI is now considered one of the most strategically significant technologies worldwide.

Demands Face Pushback
The company’s proposals are facing criticism within the industry. Opponents of the demands accuse Anthropic of exaggerating the risks of artificial intelligence. Additionally, the company is accused of wanting to slow down the competition under the guise of safety concerns.

Regardless, authorities are closely monitoring the development of powerful AI systems. The Anthropic model “Mythos” has not yet been released to the general public due to its capabilities in cybersecurity.
Authorities Tighten Control
The U.S. government has also expanded its oversight. President Donald Trump ordered that particularly powerful AI models from the U.S. can be reviewed before their release.
Whether this will lead to a long-term internationally coordinated halt in the development of particularly powerful AI systems remains open. Anthropic considers global cooperation necessary, but reaching an agreement among all major stakeholders is seen as difficult.
