WhatsApp may soon introduce a paid subscription for private users. Initial indications of this come from a recent beta version of the Android app. According to this, the messenger is working on additional features that will be offered through a premium model.
Since the end of 2022, WhatsApp has been testing a paid upgrade for businesses in some regions. The offering is called WhatsApp Business Premium. It expands the Business app with additional features, such as a more comprehensive company page, the ability to use the account on more devices, and better options for organizing chats within a team. Now, there are signs that a similar model is being prepared for private users. However, the features are expected to differ from the business version.
Indications in Current Beta Version
According to the blog “WABetaInfo,” the Android beta version 2.26.9.6 includes, for the first time, a waitlist for a potential premium subscription. Users can register there and will be notified once the offer starts. Currently, the feature is still in an early testing phase and is only available to selected beta testers.
Importantly, the messenger itself is not expected to become entirely paid. Basic functions like messaging, voice and video calls, and sending photos will remain free.
The planned subscription could, however, bring additional convenience features. This apparently includes the ability to pin more chats in the overview. Currently, a maximum of three conversations can be pinned at the top of the list. It is not yet known how many chats will be possible with the premium model.

New App Icons and More Personalization
Additionally, WhatsApp is apparently working on new personalization options. It is planned that the app icon can be changed in the future. Internally, more than a dozen icons are expected to be available. The classic WhatsApp icon will remain available. However, new accent colors for the user interface could be introduced, reflecting in filters, tabs, and certain buttons. Additional sticker packs are also expected to be part of the premium subscription.
When WhatsApp will introduce the premium offering for private users is currently unclear.
