WhatsApp is working on a new feature that will allow users to chat directly with people who do not have a WhatsApp account. These so-called “guest chats” are currently in development and first appeared in the Android beta version 2.25.22.13.
Direct Chats Without a WhatsApp Account
Unlike previous solutions with third-party integrations, the new feature operates entirely within WhatsApp’s own system. A registered user can invite a contact who does not use WhatsApp via a unique link, according to WABetaInfo. This link can be sent via SMS, email, or other platforms. When the recipient opens the link, they are directed to a browser-based chat interface similar to WhatsApp Web. No account or download is required to participate.
Features and Limitations of WhatsApp Guest Chats
Guest chats are intended solely for one-on-one conversations. Group chats, voice or video calls, and the sending of photos, videos, GIFs, or other file attachments are not possible. There are conflicting indications about whether the exchange of simple media files will be supported in the future. However, it is certain that all messages in guest chats will be end-to-end encrypted. This means only the two participants can read the content—even WhatsApp itself has no access.

Compatibility Requirements
The development is related to the Digital Markets Act of the European Union. This law requires large platforms like WhatsApp to open their services to other providers and ensure interoperability. While third-party chats rely on external developer solutions, guest chats keep complete control and implementation with WhatsApp.
How the Technical Implementation Works
As it stands, the connection is likely established through WhatsApp’s web resources. The guest opens the invitation link in a browser, creating an encrypted session. This solution enables secure communication without additional software. WhatsApp has not yet announced when the feature will be officially available to everyone.
