WhatsApp plans several changes for 2026. New features promise more control over devices, storage, and privacy, while some options will intentionally disappear. An overview of WhatsApp’s plans for the coming year shows which changes will truly affect users and what new additions are coming.
At the turn of the year, WhatsApp announces extensive changes aimed at improving user experience and setting new technical standards. The focus is on enhanced privacy features, deeper Apple Watch integration, more precise storage management, and a newly introduced username system.
Overview
Transparent Device Management and Apple Watch Integration
In November 2025, WhatsApp released a standalone app for the Apple Watch for the first time. Users can access messages directly on their wrist–including voice messages, images, and reactions. Another update is expected to make the watch’s pairing even more visible.
According to “WABetaInfo,” a feature is already visible in an iOS beta version that lists all devices linked to the WhatsApp account, including automatically paired peripherals like the Apple Watch. These appear in the “Linked Devices” section, including the device name and last activity time.
Unlike traditional connections, no QR code authentication is required for peripherals, as pairing occurs automatically in the background. Removal is only possible by uninstalling the app on the respective device, which also ends synchronization.
The new overview aims to provide more transparency and show users which devices currently have access to their account. This is an additional security feature, especially for Apple Watch users.
Better Storage Management and New Usernames
WhatsApp is simultaneously testing new features for storage optimization. iOS beta users can now selectively delete individual messages or specific media types from chats without removing entire conversations. This feature is particularly aimed at heavy users with high media volumes.
Another central element of WhatsApp’s strategy for 2026 is the introduction of usernames. Instead of phone numbers, chats will soon be initiated via individual usernames. This is especially relevant for communication with businesses or strangers. The system is based on a “Business-Scoped User ID” (BSUID), which is intended to enhance privacy. By June 2026, businesses must adapt their systems to the new feature.
In India, WhatsApp is currently massively expanding its integration with authorities. New services allow citizens to submit applications, download documents, and receive real-time updates–directly through the app. Such e-government functions are already active in several U.S. states and are expected to be expanded globally, according to WhatsApp.

Exclusion of External AI and Advertising Launch in the EU
Starting January 15, 2026, a ban on external AI chatbots like Microsoft’s Copilot or OpenAI’s ChatGPT will take effect. Meta prohibits third-party providers from using WhatsApp Business APIs for AI purposes. In the future, only Meta AI will be available within the messenger.
Advertising on WhatsApp has been a topic for some time. Meta had announced plans to display ads in the Status. However, the EU Data Protection Commission blocked this in June 2025, stating that the announced advertising model would not be introduced in the EU before 2026. This was explained by ongoing discussions with Meta to address privacy concerns. According to Meta, data exchange with Facebook and Instagram only occurs with the explicit consent of users.
With the start of 2026, the announced deadline has been reached, and new developments regarding advertising on WhatsApp are expected.

New Features for the Turn of the Year Already Available
At the turn of 2025/2026, WhatsApp activates a series of time-limited features. When certain party emojis like the confetti cannon are used as reactions, an animated confetti explosion appears in the chat. This is complemented by a new animated sticker set featuring dancing figures and a “Happy New Year” motif.
For the Status area, there is a new template that allows up to six images to be combined with an animated “2026” sticker. New effects like fireworks and stars also provide visual highlights during video calls. The animations are based on the storage-efficient Lottie technology and will disappear shortly after New Year’s, according to WhatsApp.
