WhatsApp beta programs are a popular target for cybercriminals. Scammers offer fake access on Telegram for payment, even though official access is exclusively through Apple’s TestFlight.
Many software providers offer beta programs to test new features with a small group of users. The Meta company also regularly releases beta versions of its WhatsApp messenger. Some of these test versions are accessible to all users, while others are only for select groups. Cybercriminals exploit the demand for WhatsApp beta access to deceive users.
Alleged Beta Access for Money
The insider blog “WABetaInfo” reports that scammers offer beta and alpha versions of WhatsApp through a seemingly legitimate Telegram channel. They use manipulated screenshots to fake exclusive features and post news from “WABetaInfo” to appear authentic. A fake verification badge is intended to present the Telegram channel as Meta’s official WhatsApp channel.
Users who contact the scammers are asked to pay between 25 and 50 U.S. dollars (approximately 21 to 42 euros) via PayPal. They use the “Friends and Family” option, which prevents transfers from being recalled and is not covered by buyer protection. This should immediately raise suspicion.
Only One Way Leads to the Beta Program
Meta offers its WhatsApp beta access for iOS users exclusively through Apple’s TestFlight program and does not charge for participation. If all spots are filled, users should not seek other ways, as they risk falling victim to scammers.

Users who have transferred the requested amount do not receive access to the WhatsApp beta. According to the report, users regularly report falling for the scam. The criminals have already applied this scheme to Threads and X.
