There are certainly some people who wonder what Lady Diana or Heath Ledger would look like today if they hadn’t died so young. Or how our current stars might look in 30 to 40 years. A Turkish artist is trying to find answers with the help of AI.
When famous people die, iconic images are etched in our minds. We all remember Kurt Cobain at the legendary MTV Unplugged concert with a cigarette and cardigan. Or Lady Di, always looking slightly shy with her head slightly bowed toward the cameras. Unforgettable, too, is the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, whose face, due to numerous cosmetic surgeries, resembled a mask shortly before his death. What if all these people hadn’t died? A project using artificial intelligence (AI) provides the images. And the project goes much further.
Overview
AI Project Shows Deceased Celebrities
The mind behind the project “As If Nothing Happened” is Turkish photographer and artist Alper Yesiltas. Through his Instagram channel, he showcases photos of famous deceased individuals. In addition to the already mentioned celebrities, we see photos of John Lennon from the Beatles, British singer Amy Winehouse, and “Queen” legend Freddie Mercury.
The astonishing thing: The photos look as if they were taken just yesterday. The natural aging of the face appears so lifelike, as if these people were still among us.

Touching Portraits
Some of the depicted individuals died at a young age. Among them are the soul legend with the raspy voice, Janis Joplin, and rock icon and guitarist Jimi Hendrix. Thanks to AI, we now get an impression of how these famous people would look today, aged gracefully.
Actor Heath Ledger achieved great success in various genres. In “Brokeback Mountain,” for example, he impressed alongside Jack Gyllenhaal as a young man struggling with his sexuality. The romantic comedy “10 Things I Hate About You” is also unforgettable. And, of course, his portrayal of the Batman villain Joker remains iconic to this day. Posthumously, he received the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor after he was found dead in January 2008 due to medication misuse.

In 1995, singer Selena died at just 23 years old. Unfortunately, part of her myth is that she was shot by a supposedly good friend after embezzling money. To this day, Selena remains one of the most popular Latina musicians worldwide.
Freddie Mercury is still considered one of the most influential rock musicians in history. With his band “Queen,” he released hits like “We Are the Champions,” “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “We Will Rock You,” and “Don’t Stop Me Now.” The artist died in 1991 at just 45 years old from an AIDS-related illness.

AI Not Only Reverses Death
The AI photos of Michael Jackson and Amy Winehouse are particularly moving. We see a Michael Jackson with natural, curly hair and a full beard, laughing happily. A King of Pop we would never have seen in real life.
Amy Winehouse couldn’t handle her fame at a young age and numbed herself with alcohol and drugs. The last photos of her lifetime show a fallen artist, marked by drug addiction. Artist Alper Yesiltas shows us a woman in her late 30s, beaming at the camera.
The artist has also brought old stars into the present in his project. We get a rough idea of how well Audrey Hepburn would have suited a modern hairstyle and clothes. Or how Charlie Chaplin would have looked today without his iconic bowler hat.

How Our Stars of Today Could Age
Partly due to the success of his project “As If Nothing Happened,” the artist is now taking it a step further. With the help of AI, he not only shows possible portraits of deceased celebrities but also how today’s celebrities might look in a few decades.
We can conclude that, for example, Ryan Gosling or Robert Pattinson will likely age gracefully.
AI Art–Impressive and Frightening
Viewing the images inevitably creates the wish that these people had the chance to see themselves this way. Despite AI, all portraits do not appear artificial but very realistic. According to his own statements, these thoughts motivated artist Alper Yesiltas to start this project. The photographer chose famous people who impressed him in his life and whom he misses. The idea of seeing these people again drives him.
Yesiltas experimented with various AI programs for his project to depict the selected celebrities as realistically as possible. The result is both impressive and frightening because it shows what AI is capable of today. In the film industry, the idea of bringing famous and beloved deceased actors back to life using computers has been around for a while. This has already been successfully implemented in some cases, such as in the Star Wars trilogy, where we see Carrie Fisher as Princess Leia even after her death. Or consider deepfake videos, where politicians give speeches that never happened.
The art project “As If Nothing Happened” by artist Alper Yesiltas is a decidedly positive exception in this series. The photographer uses AI responsibly and with the intention of giving us unforgettable moments that were never captured by a camera.
