Anyone with a smartphone inevitably uses various apps for their mobile device. Accordingly, the selection is vast: banking, streaming, navigation–there’s an app for everything now. A recent ranking lists apps that are particularly user-friendly.
Using many different apps has become second nature to most people. It’s essential that apps not only offer the content users are looking for but are also generally user-friendly in handling. That’s why Focus Money and the agency ServiceValue jointly examined more than 500 apps and surveyed 90,000 users for their opinions.
What Makes a Good App?
In the study, nearly 50 categories were distinguished, including everyday applications such as email, banking, and dating apps. The ranking also compares offerings in areas like energy providers, airlines, and smart home.

To determine the user-friendliness of the apps, users were asked for a general rating. They were to indicate whether they found an app “excellent,” “very good,” “good,” “mediocre,” or “poor.” Apps with the highest average satisfaction scores are considered particularly user-friendly.
This line of questioning doesn’t precisely differentiate what users liked about the app. In the end, it likely comes down to a combination of various factors. The offered features are, of course, crucial, especially in direct comparisons within a category. Studies have also shown that convenience and time savings are important reasons for using an app. Do the applications offer their users advantages and are they easy to handle?
These Apps Are Particularly User-Friendly
The apps and their use cases can vary significantly. For instance, “Shop Apotheke” performs particularly well in the pharmacy apps category. In car rentals, “Enterprise Rent-A-Car” comes out on top. The Payback app is considered the best in the bonus programs category, while “Lalalab” was named the best photo services app.
For those looking to learn a new language, “Busuu: Learn Languages” seems to be a good choice. In tax return apps, “Zasta: Super-App for Taxes” ranks the highest. “WetterOnline with RainRadar” has the best scores among weather apps, while in public transport, “VRR App & DeutschlandTicket” has the highest satisfaction ratings.
Overall, the study shows that in many areas, the big names win. For example, the Otto app leads in the generalist segment, while Check24 wins among comparison portals.
