Those who read important news or use banking apps may not want their seat neighbors to read along on their smartphone. Xiaomi is apparently developing a new Smart Privacy Display for the upcoming 18 Pro series precisely for this purpose.
How the Technology Works
According to “Android Authority,” Xiaomi relies on two different pixel types. In everyday use, the display functions normally. When privacy mode is activated, special pixels turn on, directing light forward. This keeps the screen clearly visible to the user, but the content nearly disappears from side angles.
At an angle of more than 60 degrees, brightness is expected to drop to about one percent. For others, the display then appears almost black.

Flexible Protection for Sensitive Content
The potential implementation is particularly intriguing. The privacy screen is expected to work not only for the entire display but also for individual apps, notifications, or specific screen areas.
The presentation of the Xiaomi 18 Pro series is scheduled for September 23 and is initially focused entirely on a China release. Whether the privacy feature will later appear in Europe remains uncertain.
